# Winnacunnet football runs wild on Dover, maintains undefeated roll

HAMPTON — Coming off a victory in a low-scoring dogfight last week, it was fair to wonder whether the undefeated Winnacunnet High School football team had finally come back down to earth after thrashing its prior opponents to open the season.

Any ideas that the Warriors might be leveling off were put to rest with a 40-6 triumph over Dover Friday night in an Division I East Conference duel.

Winnacunnet (5-0) had six players run for touchdowns to extend its season-long winning streak and widen its overall scoring differential to a whopping 173-33\. Friday marked the third time the Warriors put up 40 points or more in a game this season.

"It's just a lot of effort in the offseason. If you look at the six guys running the ball for us, there are some pretty rugged guys and that's all from the work they put in," Winnacunnet coach Ryan Francoeur said. "They're very disciplined kids. … When you're coming right downhill at somebody like we're doing, that kind of me-versus-you stuff, we have to win every individual matchup, protect our gaps and hit the hole hard with our head up. Very proud of these guys for doing all that."

Tucker McCann, Matt Alkire, Kyle Tilley, Chris Capezzuto, Conor Fenlon and Owen Bateman took care of the scoring as Winnacunnet led 19-0 at halftime and scored 26 unanswered at one point. McCann, who led the Warriors' ground game with 130 of 343 rushing yards, had the longest of the team's touchdowns with a 22-yard scamper.

"They were just leaving holes and it was pretty open for us," McCann said. "I think we ran maybe like four different plays the whole game. Pretty much dive the whole time. We don't need to show much of our offense right now with a lot of season left to play."

There really wasn't anything particularly special about the Warriors' offensive success besides timing, but what proved impressive was their ability to bounce back. Turnovers on Winnacunnet's first and third possessions threatened to set the team back, but it responded with touchdowns by McCann and Capezzuto on each drive following the turnovers.

On the other hand, Dover (3-2) did itself no favors when it was gifted the chance to capitalize on Winnacunnet's miscues, punting on both drives after the fumbles with momentum up for grabs. Besides a Darian Lopez-Sullivan score on a 1-yard keeper and a couple 20-plus yard passes from the senior quarterback, the Green Wave was bottled up, and at times manhandled, by Winnacunnet's defense.

Alkire admitted the Warriors' preparations for Friday focused primarily on scheming against Lopez-Sullivan's arm and legs. What Winnacunnet drew up couldn't have worked out better with Lopez-Sullivan completing just eight of his 20 passes and limiting him to 34 yards on 16 carries.

"We just wanted to keep him in the pocket, contain and make sure the defensive ends weren't coming up too far," Alkire said. "Then it was all about having corners stay on their men so when he was scrambling out, there wasn't anybody open"

Alkire, Capezzuto, Jack McCann and Jake Fredericks were most active in holding Lopez-Sullivan in check with Capezzutto and Fredericks chasing from the edges while Alkire and Jack McCann patrolled the middle of the field and forced Dover's quarterback to the sidelines when he did get loose.

"All of us have been playing since sixth grade together. Our chemistry is just crazy," Alkire said of the defense overall. "We're just so aggressive and smart about what we do out there."

Both teams were composed of rugged athletes, but it was Winnacunnet that let its physicality shine through most. Whether it was stuffing Dover's run game, which registered just 32 yards overall, or finishing tackles at the point of reception to force a handful of dropped passes directly in the hands of Green Wave receivers, the Warriors made the most of their strength and athleticism.

"I've got great positional coaches that get in there deep with the kids about their jobs and technique, but we also have a group of seniors and juniors that just love football," Francoeur said. "They get more upset than I get upset when they make mistakes. You have to love that as a coach. Already knowing that we are pretty athletic, physical and fast, these guys want to try and get all the little things right so we don't end up plateauing and end up better each week."
