NASHUA – The Bishop Guertin High School football team was just a few yards away from an opening-night win Saturday against Winnacunnet.

But even before Chris Fox’s 50-yard field goal attempt at the buzzer fell short, the Cardinals had other opportunities to pull out a win against the Warriors. Instead, Winnacunnet headed back to the seacoast with a 23-22 victory over Bishop Guertin at Stellos Stadium.

Fox missed two extra points earlier in the game, and quarterback Tom Hurley turned the ball over twice, once on an interception in the end zone early in the third quarter and another on a fumbled snap as the Cardinals were driving in the fourth.

“It’s the little details that we’ve got to clean up and that makes the difference,” Bishop Guertin coach Travis Cote said. “We’ve got to put it behind us and improve on the little things. We battled a very good team right to the end. We could have won, but we came up short.”

Mike Deveraux scored two touchdowns for the Cardinals (0-1), one rushing and one receiving, and Kelvin Rivera had 100 yards rushing and a touchdown, as Bishop Guertin found ways to move the ball. The Cardinals finished with 411 yards of offense, but couldn’t get into the end zone in the second half.

Bishop Guertin took the lead on its first drive, as Fox hit a 31-yard field goal, but Winnacunnet answered right back, getting a 4-yard scoring run from Jon Flagg (86 yards rushing, two TDs). The Warriors’ Max Chaykowsky missed the extra point to make it 6-3.

Rivera gave the Cardinals the lead back, breaking a couple of tackles and turning quickly up field for a 77-yard touchdown run with 11:14 left in the second. But Flagg again answered with a touchdown run, this time from 5 yards out, to make it 13-10 Winnacunnet.

The Cardinals again got a quick strike, as Devereaux took a short pass from Hurley 83 yards for a touchdown, breaking several tackles on the play.

“We’re usually a pretty good tackling team, but give their backs credit,” Winnacunnet coach Ron Auffant said. “Their kids ran hard and broke tackles. I was real concerned with our defense, but we held on.”

A 32-yard field goal by Chaykowsky tied the game 16-16 with 36.1 seconds left in the first half.

The Warriors got the ball to open the second half, but a fumbled snap on the drive’s second by Ing Hao Veasna was received by Kody Carlson for Bishop Guertin. Flagg got the ball right back for Winnacunnet (1-0), intercepting Hurley in the end zone, and the Warriors took advantage, going 80 yards in 10 plays, highlighted by a 50-yard pass from Veasna to Alec Boucher.

Veasna found Boucher again for an 11-yard touchdown pass to end the drive and put Winnacunnet up 23-16.

Bishop Guertin responded with a long drive of its own, going 70 yards in 13 plays, ending on Devereaux’s 20-yard touchdown run. But the extra point was no good and the Cardinals trailed by one.

The Cardinals were still down one when they took over on their own 15 with 7:12 to play. Hurley and the offense marched down the field, getting to the Warriors’ 12-yard line, but on third-and-9, the quarterback lost the snap and Winnacunnet’s Nick Peckham recovered.

The Warriors were forced to punt with 25.4 seconds left, but the Cardinals attempts to move closer fell incomplete, leading to Fox’s miss.

“I think the guys that went in stepped up and did a good job,” Cote said. “We forced a punt when we needed to. We got the ball back and drove down. One more completion and we probably would have had it. We had to take the chance and it was a little short.”
