HAMPTON - Most football teams are not going to turn the ball over five times in a game and still walk away with a win.

Most also don't have a defense like the Winnacunnet High School football team.

Despite those five turnovers, the Warriors were able to stay in Saturday's game against Goffstown thanks to the defense, and in the final minute, the offense rose to the occasion, scoring with 12 seconds left to pull out a 9-6 win over the Grizzlies in a Division I game.

Patrick MacDougall completed 4 of 7 passes on the final drive, and scored on a 1-yard keeper to give Winnacunnet its only lead of the day, while the defense held Goffstown to just 46 yards and one first down in the second half.

"Defensively we played outstanding and we’ve been doing that pretty much all year," Winnacunnet coach Ron Auffant said. "Offensively, we didn’t play well, and I think a lot of that is an attribute to (Goffstown).

"If you had told me we would have had five turnovers to their (none), I’d say there was no way we’d win this game. We got out of rhythm and Pat forced a few things. We’ll address that and we’ll clean it up. That’s an attribute to our defense. When you have five turnovers, you shouldn’t win a football game, not against a good team like that."

The Warriors allowed 150 yards and held Goffstown to a 29-yard touchdown run by quarterback Charlie Keith in the second quarter, and the Grizzlies also missed a 33-yard field goal on their opening drive. Keith finished with 50 yards rushing and also threw for 65 more.

MacDougall finished the day with 41 yards rushing and was 8 of 25 passing for 158 yards and three interceptions, and the Warriors (5-0) lost a fumble in each half, including at the Grizzlies' 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter.

But the Winnacunnet defense forced Goffstown (4-1) to go three-and-out for the third time in the half, and the Warriors drove back down to the 10\. But on three straight tries, Winnacunnet failed to gain another yard and turned the ball over on downs.

The Grizzlies picked up six yards on first down, but got just two on second and third, and faced a fourth-and-1 at their 19 with 1:22 to play.

After having issues with the snap and protection on punts, Goffstown opted to take an intentional safety, running 12 seconds off the clock before Keith ran out of the back of the end zone, making it 6-2 Grizzlies.

"They were getting so close to blocking our punts," Goffstown coach Justin Hufft said. "There was one that they basically blocked and our kid somehow got it off. They had their all-star kicker here, so I knew they’d make their extra point, so it didn’t matter if it was six-point lead or a four-point lead.

"We thought we’d get better field position, but our kickoff following that was our bigger mistake. We gave them the ball at the 50 and I think if we’d executed better on that, things would have worked out differently."

On first down, MacDougall hit Jordan Fuller (79 yards of offense) for a 3-yard gain, but passes on second and third down fell incomplete. Facing fourth-and-7 at the Goffstown 45, with 32 seconds left, MacDougall found Tyler Hoar along the sideline for a 10-yard gain and a first down.

Josh Chase then got open over the middle of the field and MacDougall found him for another first down to the Goffstown 17, and after he spiked the ball, MacDougall hit Fuller again for a 16-yard gain to the 1.

Winnacunnet got to the line quick like it was going to spike it again, but instead, the Warriors snapped it quick and MacDougall plunged in for the touchdown.

"We didn’t execute when we wanted to," Auffant said. "I thought at that point (turning it over with 2:49 left) we were in trouble. The defense stopped them. They took the safety, which I thought was a good call, because they were having trouble with snaps. Their defense had played great all game.

"Late in the game, we held them, got the ball back with no timeouts, made some plays and won the game."
