MERRIMACK - The Winnacunnet High School field hockey team got all the goals it would need in the first 20 minutes of Wednesday's game and held off Merrimack for a 2-0 win.

Amanda Sullivan and Kendall Markland each had a goal and MacKenzie Jackson stopped two shots to earn the shutout, as the Warriors (9-2) won their fifth straight.

"It was a little slow, but here and there, we stepped it up," Winnacunnet coach Heidi Hand said. "It definitely wasn't our best game, but we did what we had to do. Not every game can be pretty."

Merrimack (5-4-1) got nine saves from Mac Hennas, as the Tomahawks have now gone 1-3-1 in their last five games. Coach Ann MacLean thought her team could have a chance to turn around that slide against the Warriors.

"Winnacunnet lost to Pinkerton and Timberlane, and we beat them, so we definitely had the potential," she said. "We're showing up and going through the motions. They were quicker and more aggressive. I think we're evenly matched, but they were getting those 50-50 balls. (On the goals), no one marked them, they actually watched as she tapped it in."

Sullivan put the Warriors up 1-0 just 3:18 into the game, knocking a loose ball into the goal as Merrimack scrambled to find it. The Tomahawks had a chance to tie it about 10 minutes later, when, off a penalty corner, the ball was sent across the front of the Winnacunnet goal, but no one was there to tap it in.

With 11:25 left in the half, Markland gave Winnacunnet a 2-0 lead on another ball that the Tomahawks were left running to catch.

"They were aggressive and had their sticks down in the right places," Hand said of the two goals. "They're two bench players and they really stepped up and put the ball in. They've worked so hard during practice and see limited play."

Defensively, the Warriors got strong play from Caroline Anastasia and Olivia Marciano, along with midfielders Sophia Cheever and Britni Ballance.

"They're two midfielders, but they're very defensive-minded and they help out a lot," Hand said. "I always tell the girls play like its 0-0 because it can be one bounce or one deflection can go in. You never want to let up. From now on, all the games are huge."
