DOVER – Before moving to Division I next year, the Winnacunnet High School boys lacrosse has some unfinished business it would like to accomplish this spring in Division II.

While the ultimate story of winning a championship won’t be easy, Winnacunnet closed out an impressive chapter on Wednesday afternoon.

After losing its season-opener against two-time defending champion Portsmouth, the Warriors haven’t lost since and concluded their regular season with an 18-5 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas (10-6) at Our Lady of Victory Stadium.

Winnacunnet (16-1) enters the D2 tournament as the top seed and will host a quarterfinal game on June 6.

“It feels great to be No.1, it’s great work and great kids to do it with,” Winnacunnet attacker Beckett Rath said. “This season has been crazy, my senior year, and I wanted to lead these boys to the top of the league.

“We did it and I’m happy with it,” Rath added. “Now it’s the playoffs and that’s all I keep thinking about.”

Rath led Winnacunnet’s dominant attack line with six goals and four assists. Juniors Brian McCown and Liam McNally added four goals apiece for the Warriors.

“We’ve never been No. 1, so this is a great way to end it,” McNally said. “We have to just keep on going and keep on rolling.”

Winnacunnet coach Pat Snow felt like his team had the potential for a memorable season and his team’s confidence continued to grow after that opening 6-5 loss to Portsmouth.

“I think everyone believed it, but the second game we went to Concord and won, but we weren’t satisfied,” Snow said. “We were fortunate to coach up some particulars with wins and we’re always trying to figure out how we can get better. That was the message moving forward.”

Winnacunnet is averaging 15.3 goals a game entering the tournament.

“We’ve got six of seven guys that can initiate our offense and I think that makes it a little bit harder to defend,” Snow said. “Those guys cashed in on their opportunities (Wednesday)."

Goalie Joel Williams and long stick midfielder Junior Paschal have led a defense that allowed 4.75 goals a game. Paschal has made a huge difference after returning to the team after playing for Exeter last year.

“(Williams) has been great and Paschal has played solid on the ball defense, clearing the ball,” Snow said. “He’s been great and he’s very comfortable with the ball in his stick.

Now comes the question for Winnacunnet, if they can leave D2 with a championship against heavyweights?

Portsmouth (14-3) and Derryfield (14-2) have combined to win the past 10 division titles and Winnacunnet lost to each team in the past two semifinals. The Warriors also lost to Derryfield in the 2019 championship game.

“Just no mental mistakes,” Snow said. “That’s why Portsmouth and Derryfield have been so successful is because they don't make a lot of mental errors. You can’t take a stupid penalty or a selfish hit. Those are things we have to focus on in the playoffs.”

Winnacunnet gained a lot of confidence with a 14-13 home victory against Derryfield on May 11.

“I believe in my team no matter what. I’ll put them against anybody,” Rath said. “We’ve already shown we can hang with them. I think it’s time now to show everybody.”
