MANCHESTER - The Winnacunnet High School boys lacrosse team had been in this spot before Thursday, going into overtime after a back-and-forth battle through regulation.

So when the opportunity presented itself for Jack Ellis to send the Warriors home with a win, he took it.

The senior buried a high shot with 48.3 seconds left in overtime to complete a Winnacunnet come back and give the Warriors a 9-8 OT win over Derryfield, their second of the week against the Cougars.

"Throughout the whole game, we were knocking," Ellis said. "Those games are fun to play, when you’re going back and forth. It was kind of a dogfight. We felt confident in the plays we were running and we ran that play to perfection. It worked for us and it was great. We have that energy rolling into the postseason."

Both teams will begin the Division II playoffs on Monday, with Winnacunnet traveling to Portsmouth for a 6 p.m. start while Derryfield will host Goffstown at 5 p.m. After the Warriors won Tuesday's meeting 13-4, both sides relished the chance to get a back-and-forth game in going into the postseason.

"To have that energy going into the playoffs and starting to feel like we’re building and starting to peak again," Derryfield coach Chris Hettler said. "You hope you can win a few more and get a shot again."

Ben Chase led Winnacunnet (13-3) with three goals and an assist while Ellis and James O'Hara had two goals and an assist apiece. Ben Merrick had three assists and Cole Fisher and Caleb White also scored for the Warriors. Carter Renaud made eight saves.

White's goal with 5:39 left in regulation tied the game at 8 and brought Winnacunnet back from a two-goal deficit. After killing off a 30-second penalty, the Warriors called a timeout with 4:18 left and had possession for a long stretch, taking five shots in the final four minutes, but couldn't get one to go.

"There was some clock management there, but also, we want to take care of it in regulation and you want to hold it for the last shot," Winnacunnet coach Pat Snow said. "But at the same time, if you get good, quality looks, maybe you’ll get another one. As long as we got a couple off there before the end, we’d be happy with that."

Quinn Silvio had four goals to lead Derryfield (12-3), including back-to-back goals in the second quarter that put the Cougars up 4-2\. Winnacunnet answered with three straight scores to take a 5-4 lead but Ryan Etzo (two goals, one assist) tied it at 5 with 2:49 left in the half and that's where it stood at halftime.

The Cougars controlled possession to start the third quarter, as they had the ball for almost four minutes to start the half while taking five shots. Silvio put Derryfield up just nine seconds into a manup with 7:30 left in the third, but Winnacunnet tied it up less than a minute later on a goal by O'Hara.

Chas Dean answered for the Cougars, as he scored 53 seconds later to put Derryfield back up 7-6, and Etzo scored with 43.5 seconds remaining in the third to make it 8-6.

"It was what I expected to have happen on Tuesday, but I think guys needed to see that team and how they matched up," Hettler said. "They were ready to go and had more energy for that game and things snowballed quickly. (Thursday) we said we’re going to come out, we know we can play with these guys. We’re going to make a few adjustments, but I wanted to see a better effort. We executed what we thought we would on Tuesday."

A 30-second penalty on Winnacunnet at the end of regulation gave Derryfield the ball and a manup situation to start overtime, but Renaud came up with a save and the Warriors took a timeout with 3:22 left to set up a play.

But on the other end, Derryfield's Jaxon Snyder (seven saves) came up with a stop of his own, and the Cougars took a timeout after crossing midfield with 2:47 to play. Derryfield was able to get a couple of shots off, including one that hit the crossbar, before Renaud made a stop on Etzo and the Warriors cleared the ball.

The Cougars were caught offsides during the transition and the Warriors capitalized with the game-winner by Ellis.

"I think it took us a while to wake up, and those two goals late to tie it up, I think were where we flipped the switch on," Snow said. "We took care of business killing the penalty. Carter was great as always. It created some confusion for them and we capitalized in OT."
