HOLLIS – Bob Murphy had seen the Hollis Brookline High School girls basketball team come back on several occasions this season.

When the Cavaliers got behind, they usually chipped away, and once they took the lead, it was the end of the story.

Not on Friday.

No. 1 HB (18-2) fell behind early, rallied to tie the game going into halftime, but was outscored by 23 points over the final 13 minutes to fall to No. 9 Windham, 61-39, in the Division II quarterfinals.

For Windham, which is in its third year as a varsity program, it’s the first time the Jaguars have advanced to the semifinals. There, they will take on No. 5 Kearsarge, which knocked off No. 4 Coe-Brown. The other semifinal will feature a rematch of last year’s title game between No. 6 Souhegan and No. 2 Lebanon.

The loss marks the third year in a row the Cavs have had their season ended by a lower seeded team on their own court.

“We had a tough time getting good shots off and then on the defensive end, their kids made good shots,” Murphy said. “They turned on the jets. I don’t think we did that much wrong, it’s just that they did a lot things right offensively, and especially defensively.”

Windham coach Joe Mason wanted to slow down the Cavs’ transition game, something the Jaguars (15-5) were unable to do when they lost to HB by 13 points during the regular season.

“They lived all season long on pushing the ball to Katie (Stopera) and getting fast-break opportunities,” Mason said. “We made a conscious effort to not let that happen.”

While Windham was keeping HB from running, the Jaguars got their transition game into high gear in the second half.

“I think we just got them in the transition,” Mason said. “In the fourth quarter, I don’t think we ran a real set play because we had so many transition opportunities. They needed to put pressure on us to get the ball back and we did the little things, like make our layups.”

Katie Stopera led all scorers with 24 points for HB, including her 1,000th career point in the first half. Kelsey Berry added 13 points, but only one other player scored for the Cavs.

“We had opportunities and we just were missing,” Murphy said. “That’s part of the game. It’s just tough when it’s in a playoff game.”

Windham got 15 points from Kelsey Schiebel and 13 points each from Kerry White and Bernadette Connors.

The Jaguars went ahead by nine early in the second quarter, but the Cavs rallied, thanks largely to Stopera, to tie the game at 22 going into halftime. Stopera scored 17 points in the first half, reaching a thousand just before the break.

“We came out way too slow,” she said. “Second quarter, we really picked it up. We can still do this and it kind of gave us hope, but in the third quarter, we really lost it.”

The Cavs trailed 31-30 with 2:36 left in the third, but the Jaguars outscored HB 8-3 to lead by six going into the fourth. Windham then scored the first six points of the quarter, making it a 14-3 run, to take a 45-33 lead with 6:01 left.

HB managed to keep it a 12-point game thanks to four free throws by Berry, but Windham ended the game on a 12-2 run to end the season for the Cavs.

“I think it was so hard (to lose) because we’re such a family,” Stopera said. “I don’t care that we lost, I care that I won’t get to see them (teammates) every day. The friendships that we made are what matters. All we did was lose a basketball game.”
