BEDFORD - The Windham High School girls volleyball team had been looking for a signature moment to the season.

Perhaps the Jaguars got it in their 3-1 win Tuesday night over Bedford.

In the first two sets, Windham lost comfortable leads only to come back and win both, and after the Bulldogs rallied to a convincing win in Game 3, the Jaguars led from start to finish in the fourth set to close out the Division I victory. Game scores were 26-24, 25-22, 15-25 and 25-16.

"The girls definitely battled back," Windham coach Jill Bartlett said. "I’m hoping that this is one of those opportunities for a defining moment for the team and the program, to see how far they can extend themselves and push themselves. Just what they have when they act as a group, how far they can go as a team."

Barlett felt a big reason for the Jaguars (7-7) ability to come back multiple times against the Bulldogs (8-5) was the team's energy, both on the court and from the bench.

"Whether they were on the court or on the bench, they had tremendous energy," the coach said. "I’m proud of the way they played and persevered. It’s what you want at this point in the season. You want them to rally, you want them to come together. We have a long two weeks ahead of us. You want to know that they have it in them to persevere."

Windham got a big game from a couple of sophomores, as Cassandra Faria led the Jaguars with 14 kills and Kayla Stevens had four kills and three aces. Julia Leppanen had 21 assists and two aces while Arielle Nysten had four kills and Nicole Batson had 11 digs.

Bedford, which dropped its second match in as many days after a five-match win streak, got a big game from sophomores outside hitter Julia Giroux, libero Hayley Salis and setter Caleigh O'Connell while Elle Monfried was strong at the service line for the Bulldogs.

"We’re at that point, this is our second game this week and four total," Bedford coach Anna McGann said. "Next week we’ve got three. It’s been a short season and games condensed into short weeks. I think the girls are working hard and we’re just trying to find our groove. We’re trying to tighten things up."

The Bulldogs looked like they found that groove in Game 1\. After Windham took a 9-2 lead, Bedford answered with a 16-5 run to take its largest lead of the set, 18-14\. But the Jaguars were able to cut the lead in half, and then, with Ava Mayo serving, won six straight points to go up 23-19.

Bedford came back to tie it at 24, but Windham won the final two points to take the set.

The Jaguars held a slim lead through most of the second set before the Bulldogs, with Giroux serving, took five straight points to grab a 21-17 lead. But again, Windham came back, this time with Stevens serving, and won four straight to take a 22-21 lead before closing out another win.

"Volleyball is a funny sport," McGann said. "It is such a momentum game and such an energy game. Being able to be mentally tough to come out of those points with enough energy to carry for the next five, it’s such an important skill for any team to have. I lost 10 (seniors) last year, so we had three returners and the rest are newcomers. It’s a unique skill. We experienced that in the second (game)."

Bedford bounced back by taking control of Game 3 early, as a 9-3 run by the Bulldogs turned a one-point deficit into a 12-7 lead. Salis had a four-point service run to help Bedford extend the lead to 19-12 and the Bulldogs cruised to the win from there.

But Bedford was unable to hold on to any momentum going into the fourth set and Windham never trailed. The Bulldogs tied things up at 15, but the Jaguars, with Ashley Philipe and Mayo serving, won 10 of the final 11 points to close out the match.
