The Windham High School girls basketball team may have done all that trial and error just in Monday night's game against Nashua North. The Jaguars switched up their defense a couple of times to try to slow down the Titans' perimeter game, finally doing so in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 39-28 win in a Division I contest. Down by one late in the third quarter, Windham (3-0 in D1) outscored North 16-4 over the final nine-plus minutes thanks to more drives to the basket and key free throws. And after the Titans hit six 3-pointers in the first three quarters, the Jaguars held them to one in the fourth. "I think they were receptive to changing up defenses," Windham coach Cassie Turcotte said. "Sometimes you go into a game and the game plan doesn’t work, or the opponent isn’t the way you expected them to be. Nashua North is very deceiving. It’s easy to take a look at them during warmups and size them up and go ‘we’ve got this.’ Then they start playing and we’re caught with our tail between our legs. "Our game plan wasn’t working, at halftime, we tried something different and that didn’t work right away. We just kept trying something different." Windham got nine points from Lilah Boucher, as she hit three 3-pointers, while Eric Sovereign came off the bench to score seven points. Paige Carboni and Meghan Husson added six points apiece. Lillian Small led the Titans (1-2) with 10 points, including two 3s, while Angela King (seven points) and Summer St. Pierre (six) also had two 3s each. "It was an incredible effort on our girls’ part," North coach Curt Dutilley said. "They had us by five or six inches at every single position. In the preseason jamboree, they beat us by 40\. They did it easy and in three quarters. "For us to be there with three or four minutes to go and have a chance if we hit a couple of shots, it’s absolutely incredible. I couldn’t have asked for any more from the girls." It looked early like Windham might do it again, as Boucher hit back-to-back 3s to open the game and give the Jaguars a 6-0 lead. But after a timeout, the Titans got a pair of 3s of their own, as Small and St. Pierre each hit one to tie the game. In all, there were six ties and eight lead changes through the first three quarters. North took an 11-9 lead into the second quarter, but would then go more than seven minutes without scoring. Windham took advantage to go up 16-11, but the Titans answered in the final 90 seconds of the half. King and Kayla Dahl hit a pair of 3s to put North up 17-16, but a putback by Elizabeth Grasso gave Windham an 18-17 lead going into the break. The Titans went back in front to open the third and the teams traded points and the lead for most of the quarter, with neither leading by more than two points. Small got behind Windham's press for a layup with 1:23 remaining in the third to give North a 24-23, but the Jaguars scored the final three points of the quarter - all at the free throw line - to take the lead for good going into the fourth. "Unfortunately, in the third quarter, some of that catches up to you when you’re battling somebody that much bigger than you," Dutilley said. "You pick up fouls you shouldn’t pick up and it put them in the bonus. That’s where lacking size hurts. You’ve got to go a little harder for the ball, and maybe you’re catching an arm on the rebound, and now you’re fouls are adding up. That’s the way we have to live." Baskets by Husson and Carboni to open the fourth put Windham up 30-24, matching its largest lead of the game to that point. North was able to maintain possession for long stretches of the quarter, but with the Jaguars switching up their defense, the Titans struggled to find the open shots they'd had earlier in the game. "They make their 3s and they like the corners," Turcotte said. "It wasn’t a surprise to us, but we had a challenge getting there or staying there. The ball would go to the corner, we’d get there, and then we’d back off. We had to answer those 3s. Those move the score along a little faster and we weren’t making them from the outside." Another basket by Husson and one from Sara Guarnaccia made it 34-25 and Windham was able to close out the game from there.
