DERRY - Windham High School football coach Bill Raycraft watched a lot of film of Pinkerton Academy over the last few weeks, and noticed there was something other teams weren't doing.

No one had played physical enough against the Astros and Raycraft felt his Jaguars could.

The coach was right, as Windham got out to a 35-7 lead in the second half and did not lay off for 60 minutes, leading to a 35-21 win over Pinkerton in a Division I South Conference matchup.

"We had a lot of film on Pinkerton as a lot of the teams they were playing had just played them," Raycraft said. "However, no team had punched Pinkerton in the mouth."

Windham had four different players score in an extremely balanced attack.

Pinkerton started the game with the ball and took it 47 yards, however on a double-dive play, the Jaguars blitz got to Pinkerton quarterback Aiden Goujon to fumble, giving the Jaguars their first possession starting at their own 10-yard line. They took the ball 90 yards, capped off with a goal line carry by lead back Tommy Emrick.

After the game Raycraft said they switched up their traditional wing-T formation. Against the Astros, Windham lined up tight end Cody Stevens and moved him into the backfield at fullback, and moved fullback Riley Desmarais into a more traditional formation.

"It's the formation they played as kids," Raycraft said.

Pinkerton fumbled on its next drive, giving the Jaguars excellent field position. An Astros facemask penalty on a fourth down stop extended the drive leading to a touchdown from Cody Potter to Emrick for his second touchdown of the day. Emrick finished the game with 214 total yards.

After an exchange of three-and-outs, the Astros had good field position and were able to punch the ball in from 2 yards out with a run from Nick Lombardi cutting the Windham lead to 14-7 with 2:52 remaining in the half.

On the ensuing drive, Windham was able to drive 13 plays and 80 yards before halftime, capped off by a touchdown pass from Potter to Stephan Robert giving the Jaguars a 21-7 lead heading into the half. The two key plays on the drive were both third-and-10 draws where Windham caught the Astros off guard.

"We need to get a stop on the first possession to get the momentum back in our favor," Pinkerton coach Brian O'Reilly said of his halftime message.

But that was not the case on that opening possession, as Windham drove right down the field, capped with a pass from Potter to Cameron Burns pushing the score to 28-7.

Then the Jaguars were able to stop Pinkerton, then came back and scored on a 4-yard rush from Stevens pushing the score to 35-7.

To start the fourth quarter, Pinkerton gained some momentum with a 6-yard touchdown rush by fullback Gannon Fast, then recovered an onside kick, which led to another touchdown, this time from Gennaro Marra. But that was all the Astros would get.

"We understand the tradition of this program and we were excited to come out with a win," Raycraft said.

Both teams will be fighting for a playoff spot in their regular-season finales next week, as Pinkerton heads to Winnacunnet on Friday and Windham hosts Portsmouth-Oyster River on Saturday.
