WINDHAM – Taking advantage of opportunities isn’t just something the Windham High School football team tries to do to boost its confidence on the field.

The resulting impact on the opponent can be just as beneficial.

The Jaguars came up big in all phases early in Saturday's game against Hollis Brookline and cruised to a 49-18 win over the Cavaliers in the Division I South opener for both teams.

Tommy Emrick rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, leading a Windham rushing attacked that gained 310 yards, and Cody Potter completed just six passes, but three went for touchdowns, including two to Thomas Splagounias.

Windham led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, and had a four-touchdown advantage at halftime, despite committing nine penalties in the opening half.

"There were a lot of first game mistakes, silly penalties, and drives we hurt ourselves on," Windham coach Bill Raycraft said. "Defensively, to keep a high-powered offense like that, regardless of who is at quarterback, out of the end zone, says a lot for where our program is."

The Jaguars' defense allowed just 90 yards in the first half, and finished with 10 sacks, including two that resulted in fumbles Windham recovered.

Another of those sacks came on HB's seventh offensive play and knocked Cavs senior quarterback Joey Delaney out with what appeared to be an injury to his left shoulder. HB coach Chris Lones wasn’t sure exactly what the injury was after the game, but Delaney suffered a broken collarbone in the same area as a sophomore.

"Not the way we had it planned," Lones said. "They were kind of relentless and we didn’t do a good job when they started to stack those linebackers to the outside. We didn’t do a good job of getting there."

Many times, when the Windham defense made stops, the offense benefited. Of the Jaguars' eight first-half possessions, five started in HB territory and they found the end zone on four of those five, including their first of the game.

After the Cavs opened with a three-and-out, Windham needed just five plays to go 49 yards, scoring on a 3-yard run by Emrick.

The teams traded a couple of punts after that, and the Cavs appeared to get the game's first turnover when Connor Zorn picked off a pass by Potter. But HB was called for a personal foul before the interception and Windham got the ball back. Four plays later, Potter hit Splagounias for a 10-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

HB went three-and-out again, and after a short punt by Joe Brown set the Jaguars up at the Cavs' 31, Windham needed just three plays to find the end zone, this time on a 15-yard run by Emrick.

"It’s huge because it deflates a team," Raycraft said of taking advantage of opportunities. "They know they didn’t make the plays they should have when they’re on offense, then to turn around and give it up on defense, it’s demoralizing. That’s what we want."

The Cavs finally got on the board with 9:30 left in the second quarter, when Sander Wimmer, who replaced Delaney at quarterback, scrambled for an 11-yard touchdown run to make it 21-6.

But Windham tacked on two more scores - on drives that both started inside the HB 40-yard line - as Potter found Jake Aleksa for a 3-yard score and Splagounais for a 7-yard strike to give the Jaguars a 35-6 lead at halftime.

Seth Maffeo added touchdown runs of 32- and 45-yards on Windham's first two drives of the second half to made it 49-6 with 4:08 to go in the third quarter.

HB did all the scoring in the fourth quarter, as Wimmer found Matt Simco for touchdown passes of 27 and 10 yards, the second of which came on the final play of the game. Wimmer finished 12 of 27 for 173 yards and two touchdowns passing, while Simco had six catches for 123 yards and two scores.
