MILFORD - The Milford High School football team, plagued by penalties on both sides of the ball, fell at home to Windham by the score of 28-7.

With the victory, the Jaguars improved their season record to an impressive 2-0, while the loss knocked the Spartans back to a 0-2 start.

The first quarter was a back and forth fight. Slowed by cold winds and incoming rain showers, both the Spartans and Jaguars had trouble establishing their run-first offenses under the lights of Spartan field.

Windham running back Royce Belsky opened up the offensive showing for the Jaguars, slashing the Milford defense for a 60-yard run, bringing Windham into striking distance on the Spartan 1-yard line. Belsky would finish off the drive on the next play, taking the wide run into the end zone to give the Jaguars the 7-0 lead.

Belsky and Tommy Emrick proved to be extremely valuable for the Windham offense, carrying the bulk of the load for the Jaguars.

Despite the early lead, the Spartans found some life with an excellent kick return on the ensuing kickoff. Unfortunately, the Milford offense, which struggled most of the night with offensive penalties, fizzled out as the Spartans couldn't match the pace set forth by the visitors, and were forced to punt. The offensive woes for the Spartans carried over with the defensive play as well, having their hands full stopping the Jaguar run.

Already leading 7-0, Windham decided to gamble on fourth-and-15 deep in the Spartan red zone. Windham’s Cody Potter, after a low snap, was able to evade the Milford pass rush and rumble his way in for the touchdown on a crucial second quarter possession. The 15-yard run put the Jaguars in front 14-0 with just two minutes remaining in the half.

A great return by the Spartans' Gavin Urda of the following kickoff, brought the Milford offense into Windham territory with just under two minutes remaining. But after a few strong defensive plays by the Jaguar defense, including a crucial sack by Bobby Dicicco, the Jaguars swiped away any chance of a Spartan score before half.

The third quarter was more of the same for both teams. Windham’s strong play on offense proved to be too much for the struggling Milford defense. Belsky’s late 30-yard carry took the Jaguars back into the Spartan red zone. On the next play, Cody Stevens was able to lower his shoulder and bull his way in for the touchdown to give his team the 21-0 lead.

Milford, with its back against the wall, needed some big plays on offense to swing the momentum in its favor heading into the final quarter of play.

The Milford offense was led by senior Zack King, who was accurate with his passing, completing almost every pass he threw. His excellent vision and quick release led to a long strike to teammate Josh Shaw, bringing the Milford offense deep into Jaguar territory for the first time in the game. On the next play, King was able to hit Urda in stride for a 30 yard touchdown pass, cutting the Jaguar lead to just 21-7 with 9:22 remaining.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, it proved to be too late.

The Jaguars were able to take the following possession and punch in another score on a 15-yard touchdown run by Stevens, his second of the game. The offense was able to chew up over five minutes off the clock, leaving the Spartans with just over four minutes to work. The Windham defense was able to shut down the Milford attack, and secure the victory for the visitors.
