WINDHAM - Bill Raycraft felt his Windham High School football team had plenty of opportunities in the first half to take control of Saturday's game against Souhegan.

Instead, the Jaguars found themselves down by four, facing a fourth-and-1 at the Sabers' 38 with under a minute to play. With their backs against the wall, the Jaguars stepped up.

Quarterback Brendan McInnis took the snap under center and rolled to his right, the ball tucked in his right arm. When he made it to the edge, he found open field in front of him, and instead of getting to the sideline, he went up the field.

"Originally, I was supposed to get out of bounds," McInnis said. "It opened up. The line did a great job of opening it up. Joey Frake had a great crack back block."

And 38 yards later, Windham had the go-ahead score. Souhegan fumbled away the kickoff, but got the ball back with 8.1 seconds left, had two Hail Mary attempts come up short and the Jaguars held on for a 30-26 victory in a Division II South Conference game.

"I felt that we had more opportunities in the first half and we killed ourselves with penalties," Raycraft said. "The ending made for a good story, but we could have been better in the first half and it would have saved us in the end.

"That’s a good team and we told them they were going to come in scrappy. That’s a team that’s not used to being down. They came in to fight and they had us on the ropes. The positive is that we saw some adversity and the guys answered."

McInnis finished with 90 yards rushing and two touchdowns - both in the fourth quarter - to lead a Jaguars team (2-1) that was looking for redemption after last week's blowout loss to Plymouth.

"I think we proved a lot, not just to the people in attendance here," McInnis said. "Souhegan is a great team. Plymouth is a great team, but that wasn't us last week. This week, we played our football. I would have liked to get the passing game going a little bit, but we showed people what Windham football is about."

For Souhegan (0-3), it was another loss in the final minute of the game. The Sabers fell to Hanover last week, 25-21, on a late touchdown.

"We're inches away, and these last two games, it’s heartbreaking," Souhegan coach Mike Lochman said. "The way the last couple of weeks have gone, these guys have grown up really fast. They've had to. These types of games, one of them can be a whole season's worth because it's tight and inches matter. We have to learn how to close games out."

The final score overshadowed the performance turned in by Souhegan's Drew Prescott. The senior played almost every snap on offense and defense, and he finished with a game-high 212 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 29 carriers.

Souhegan's Drew Prescott rumbles into the end zone.

Prescott put Souhegan on the board midway through the first quarter, scoring on an 81-yard run. Windham tied the game with 2:21 left in the opening frame on a 54-yard run by Shane Lafond (82 yards rushing).

The Jaguars tried to execute an onside kick after the score, but the ball failed to go 10 yards and Souhegan started the drive on Windham's 49\. On third-and-11, quarterback Isaac Nevrla hit Jerrell Duguay Webster for a 30-yard completion, and two plays later, the junior found William Hart for a 15-yard touchdown. The point after was no good, but the Sabers led 13-7.

Windham took its first lead on a defensive touchdown. An incomplete pass by Nevrla behind the line was ruled a lateral, and Windham's Guillaume Gauthier scooped up the loose ball and returned it 23 yards for the score to make it 14-13.

That's where it stood at the start of the fourth quarter, but Souhegan took the lead on a 7-yard run by Prescott with 10:16 left in the game. That capped a 13-play, 60-yard drive on which the Sabers converted a third-and-15 and a fourth-and-1.

But because of the earlier missed extra point, Souhegan had to go for two and Nevrla's pass fell incomplete, making it 19-14 Sabers lead.

Windham answered with a seven-play, 73-yard drive, ending with a 3-yard scoring run by McInnis. The quarterback then hit Frake for the two-point conversion to make it 22-19 with 6:51.

It was Souhegan's turn to answer, as the Sabers responded with a 10-play, 79-yard drive, with Prescott scoring on a 2-yard run with 1:20 to go. Prescott had 64 yards on the ground on the drive and Alexander Bedard's extra point made it 26-22 Sabers.

But four plays later, Windham took the lead right back.

"We knew they were going outside," Lochman said. "It’s an off tackle kind of team, so we had been training our linebackers all week to squeeze that down. We did make an adjustment (for that play). We told those guys to come up field and play contain, which we didn't do a lot of this week. We tried to contain it, but it wasn't enough."

Raycraft wasn't expecting a touchdown, but he knew the chance was there.

"We knew it was potentially going to break a little further (than the first down marker)," he said. "I certainly didn't think it was going to go as far as it did. We design those plays to make things happen."
