MANCHESTER – Every team wants to score the first goal of the game, but when the Windham High School field hockey team didn’t in Saturday’s Division II quarterfinal, the Jaguars didn’t panic. It took No. 6 Souhegan less than five minutes to get on the board, but No. 3 Windham had been in that position against the Sabers before, and come out on top. Courtney Sweeney had both goals for Windham, scoring 31 seconds into the second half to tie the game, and converting a pass from Justine Levesque to score the difference maker. The win was the first playoff victory for Windham (12-2-1), and the Jaguars will play in the semifinals on Wednesday against No. 2 St. Thomas, which defeated No. 10 Hollis Brookline 3-0. “It was tough in the beginning,” Windham coach Amanda Ward said of the game. “They’re a tough opponent. I was worried that it would go into overtime, but these girls know they have the potential and they have to work hard for it. “A couple of reminders during the game that they had to work hard, they certainly went back and did that. To come out after halftime and 31 seconds into it, put our first goal in the net, spoke volumes of what they’re capable of doing.” Devon Hickey had the lone goal for Souhegan (10-6), scoring off an assist from Hailee Forest with 25:38 left in the first half. The Sabers took the lead when the teams met during the regular season on Oct.12, but the Jaguars were able to pull that one out in overtime, 3-2\. With a bye in the preliminary round, some Windham players watched Souhegan’s 2-1 overtime win against Goffstown last Wednesday and saw the Sabers fail to hold an early lead in that game. “They know that Souhegan kind of lets up after they score goals,” Ward said. “We took advantage of them getting comfortable.” Windham almost got the tying goal with 18 minutes left in the first half, as the ball got by Souhegan goalie Morgan Chamberlain (14 saves) and was rolling in front of the open cage, but Souhegan’s Maisy Rohrer knocked the ball away. The Jaguars got another chance with under two minutes in the half, and this time, Chamberlain was forced to cover the ball, giving Windham a penalty stroke. The Souhegan goalie came up with the save on Levesque’s attempt, keeping it a 1-0 game. But the lead didn’t last long after halftime. We had to go in expecting that.” Levesque got another chance on a penalty stroke with 21:59 left in the game, but Chamberlain again came up with the save. It was her third save on a penalty stroke in the playoffs. “Morgan was on fire,” Warecki said. “That was huge. Penalty shots are just as much, if not more, mental than they are skill. You’ve got to have skill, but it’s a penalty shot for a reason. The stroker has the advantage in that situation. I’m so proud of her for keeping her head on.” Getting two opportunities like that in the same game doesn’t happen often, and Ward felt it showed Windham what it will need to do to win down the road. “It was a testimony to how hard Souhegan was fighting for it because they were sacrificing bodies to lay on it, to do anything to stop us from scoring,” she said. “The girls saw that and it was time for them to really focus. Penalty strokes happen sometimes, but you don’t expect it to happen twice in a game. It’s something we’re going to work on going forward.” With seven minutes to go, the Jaguars again had Chamberlain beat on a penalty corner, but there was no one on the doorstep to put the ball in the cage. Sweeney made up for it minutes later to give Windham the victory.
