BEDFORD - In another big game, the Windham High School field hockey team stepped to the moment with ease.

The Jaguars pushed the pace early, scored first, and never looked back as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Bishop Guertin in the Division I semifinals at Bedford High School.

The win sends Windham to a fifth-straight title game and a chance to successfully defend its 2019 D1 title. Windham also won Division II titles in 2013, 2016, and 2017\. The Jaguars will play a Dover team, which beat Concord 3-2, playing in its first state final since 1985.

“We started three weeks later than everyone else, but as soon as we were out there, we were ready to go,” Windham coach Katie Blair said. “They got better each day, and now we get to play for the title on Sunday.”

The Jaguars set the tone early, dominating the possession game. Windham (10-0) drew eight penalty corners in the first quarter but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The breakthrough came 9:15 into the second quarter when senior Maddi O’Hare tipped in a shot from Cecilia Ponzini. Windham never let up as the Cardinals (5-4) had no answer for the Windham attack.

“No matter what ball is coming in you’ve got to try to get a touch on it because you never know who’s there and if it could potentially be a goal,” O’Hare said. “It just barely tipped off my stick. I just kind of dove for it.”

When Bishop Guertin was able to possess, the Windham midfield would suffocate the Cardinals threat before they could set up an offense. The Cardinals managed just one shot on goal and four penalty corners.

The Jaguars put the game away with an emphatic third quarter. Windham scored a second goal just under three minutes into the half off the stick of Cameron Livingstone. The Jaguars kept pressing and scored just nine minutes later off the stick of Amy Lanouette.

Bishop Guertin never seriously threatened to come back as the Jaguars defense and midfield was too much. The Cardinals possessed more in the second half but were unable to generate a shot on goal.

“We did a good job of filling the windows, having our sticks down,” Blair said. “Our midfield did a good job clogging it up and getting the ball back to our forwards.”

The win sends Windham to its eighth title game in program history. Dating back to 2012, the Jaguars have made the title game every year aside from 2015\. A win on Sunday would be the fifth title in program history.
