HOLLIS – You could not have scripted a better start to the 2019 season for the Windham High School boys volleyball team.

The Jaguars (4-0) swept defending state champion, Timberlane, 3-0, in season-opening action on April 8, and then blanked Pinkerton, which was the runner-up last spring, on April 11.

After edging Salem, 3-2, on April 12, the Jaguars hit the road on Monday and faced off against another final four team from last year in Hollis Brookline, as Windham dominated in every facet of the match during a 3-0 triumph.

Neil Rea (12 assists, five aces), Nick Kasprzak (seven kills, two aces) and Devin Ulbrich (five digs) led the charge in the victory.

“It feels good to start out with that tough of a schedule and be 4-0,” Windham coach Matt Bynon said. “It kind of lets us see where we are at and where we can go the rest of the year. We need to stay motivated through the middle part of the schedule heading toward the end, but we are feeling good. ”

The Jaguars were in full attack mode during the first set, as HB was unable to score consecutive points or take any lead. A tip kill by Austin Carroll down the left side gave the visitors an 11-6 lead, and then Windham ended Game 1 on a 9-1 run, including scoring the final six points. A service point by Rea clinched a 25-12 first-set victory.

The second set kept the fans on the edge of their seats, as the Cavaliers built a 15-11 advantage on a kill by junior middle hitter Quentin Wimmer. HB extended its lead to 17-12, but the Jaguars, who can score points in bunches, rattled off six straight, taking an 18-17 edge on a left-side kill by Carroll.

Rea rose to the occasion when it mattered the most with the game knotted at 23-23, as he tallied a kill, and then clinched a 25-23 victory on a monster block at the net.

“Our libero Devin Ulbrich has been awesome all year for us,” Bynon said. “He has been our rock back there and it all starts with him. Neil Rea has been consistent all year. We have him setting out of the middle and he is one of our best blockers so we really do not lose a step there. He has been awesome offensively distributing the ball.”

The Jaguars rode the momentum of the Game 2 victory into the final set, as they leaped out to a 20-7 lead off back-to-back aces by Rea. The Jaguars went to their bench late in the third, and HB came to within 22-17\. Kasprzak put the finishing touches on the match, slamming a kill right down the middle for a 25-17 victory.

“The first game, we came out really strong and the second game was obviously a little tight,” Bynon said. “At the end, we tried to give some young guys a chance. We passed really consistently.”

The Cavaliers (1-2), who defeated Bishop Guertin, 3-1, on April 9 and lost, 3-2, to Timberlane on April 12, suffered from a great deal of serving errors. HB was led by senior captain Mike Moscatelli (12 assists), junior middle hitter Sander Wimmer (six kills) and senior libero Felix Yang (six digs).

“We beat ourselves and made a bunch of mistakes,” Cavaliers coach Ed Leonard said. “We gave away 62 points out of 75\. When you have 62 errors in a match you are not going to win. Windham is a great team and they are (4-0) for a reason. They do a lot of different things, but I did not think we showed them what we can do.”

The Cavaliers will travel to Coe-Brown for a 5:15 p.m. start on Wednesday, while the Jaguars will make the journey to Souhegan for a 5:45 p.m. match next Monday.
