HOLLIS - Derek St. Cyr kept telling his Windham High School boys lacrosse team to keep plugging away and the tide would turn.

In the fourth quarter of Wednesday night's game against Hollis Brookline, it finally did.

Down four goals early in the quarter, and three with under five minutes to play, the Jaguars went on a run to force overtime, and after surviving an opening possession by the Cavaliers, Windham's Vito Mancini scored with 1:35 left in the extra frame for a 10-9 win in a Division II game.

Mancini got the ball down low, near the crease, and before the HB defense could slide to him, flicked a shot over his right shoulder that found its way into the net.

"Mancini has some of the craziest stick skills I’ve ever seen," St. Cyr said. "As he’s shooting it, part of me is holding my breath, saying no. But part of me is saying, if it’s going to happen, he’s the one who is going to do it.

"I knew we had it in us, but I don’t know if (the players) thought they did. We keep challenging them every game to bring it to the next level and (Wednesday) they finally did. It seemed like everything was going against us. We get down a couple of goals and we kind of get down and think the game is over. We’ve got to just keep plugging away and that’s exactly what they did."

Nate Crowley scored three goals and had an assist to lead Windham (9-2) while Matt Desmarais had two goals and an assist and Dylan Suliveras and Mancini each had a goal and an assist. Jake Suliveras and Ryan Parke also had a goal apiece and Casey Cramer had eight saves.

HB (7-5) got three goals from Connor Cook while Ben Dufoe (one assist) and Tommy Anderson had two goals apiece. Noah Taylor and JP Torgersen each had a goal and a helper and Charlie Dee made 13 saves.

"We asked the kids to control their attitude, energy and effort, and usually the rest takes care of itself," HB coach Dom St. Laurent said. "They did that for the most part. We had some uncharacteristic moments, some silly stuff that came back to bite us."

The Cavs looked to be in control of the game, taking a 5-3 lead into halftime, and after the Jaguars scored the first goal of the second half, HB had possession for long stretches before extending the lead to 7-4 before the fourth quarter.

Windham won the faceoff to open the final frame, but despite getting a couple of good looks, the Jaguars couldn't break through, and a turnover eventually led to a goal by Cook to make it 8-4 Cavs with 8:11 to play.

But Windham came right back with a pair of goals from just 47 seconds apart to cut the lead in half. The run seemed to ended there though, as HB won the next faceoff, and Anderson scored to make it 9-6 with 5:19 to play.

The Jaguars used a timeout before the faceoff and came out with two quick goals from Jake Suliveras and Desmarais to make it a one-goal game with 3:35 to go. HB got the next faceoff, but came down and took a quick shot that Cramer stopped and looked to clear.

The ball came free and rolled toward the midline, and as the teams battled for the groundball, HB was flagged for being offside.

Nine seconds into the manup, Desmarais scored to tie the game with 2:24 left to play.

"We stepped offsides and gave them a manup and they scored," St. Laurent said. "The biggest thing was I felt we were in control until a four-minute slide in the last quarter. We just couldn’t get a possession and we needed to stop the bleeding. We had an opportunity and shot it. The guys played hard. It’s a learning opportunity for our younger guys."

Neither team could get a good look before the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime. The Cavs won the faceoff to start the extra session, and after a timeout, they got the look they wanted, but the shot hit the post.

HB was able to get the groundball, but turned it over, giving Windham a chance. The Jaguars used a timeout of their own and Mancini came through with the game-winner.
