WINDHAM - The Windham High School boys basketball expected a big season from senior Joey DaSilva going into this year.

But the Jaguars also knew others were going to have to step up around him. They did that Tuesday night against Nashua South.

DaSilva had a game-high 20 points and Jack Kendzulak came off the bench to scored 19, as each hit five 3-pointers, and Windham rolled to a 65-36 win over the Panthers in a Division I game.

As a team, the Jaguars (3-0) hit 12 3s, with Jack St. Hilaire adding two as part of his 10 points and Rocky Heres was also in double figures with 12 points. After a close first quarter, Windham took control from the start of the second, going on a 16-5 run to take a 31-16 lead.

"We came out and played pretty good," Windham coach EJ Perry said. "We’re 3-0\. Joey is continuing to be what I think is the best player in the state and the others are stepping up. And then it got sloppy."

For South (0-1), it was the first game of the season after a two-week shutdown due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Nashua. The Panthers had a practice on Monday and spent most of their time meeting over Zoom and breaking down film.

"We did Zoom meetings, we watched all the film of the Bishop Guertin game, thinking that was our first opponent, and it didn’t happen," South coach Nate Mazerolle said. "We hadn’t played (Windham), so we watched them against Timberlane. We sent them workouts and they did what they could. I certainly hope we’re not a finished product."

Cody Rocheleau led South with 11 points, but no one else had more than five points, as the Panthers struggled to shoot from every where on the floor, including the free throw line. South finished the night 5 of 15 on free throws.

South took a 2-0 lead when Rocheleau threw down a two-handed dunk in transition, but Windham answered right back with DaSilva's first 3-pointer of the game. The Jaguars went up 7-3 early, but the Panthers kept it close and a basket by Cyris Roig at the buzzer made it 15-11 at the end of one.

But Windham opened the second quarter with back-to-back 3s by Kendzulak, the second of which came off an offensive rebound, pushing the Jaguars' lead to 10\. Windham outscored South 23-11 in the quarter and took a 38-22 lead into halftime.

"Obviously, they are very good and have one of the best players in the state," Mazerolle said. "He’s not the entire team. They have other kids who can shoot it. They execute and they do what they’re asked. They work their tails off. That’s a very good basketball. When you’re a good basketball team and you outwork you’re opponent, that’s going to end up being a 30-point win for you."

A quick 9-0 run by Windham, including back-to-back 3s by St. Hillaire, at the end of the third quarter made it 51-30 going into the fourth, and Mazerolle opted to go with his second unit for the rest of the game.

"Those kids played hard," the coach said. "That second group has done a very nice job in the last two practices. They deserved that, and they may deserve more because they work hard. They may not be as talented as the first group, but they gave us the effort."

The teams will meet again on Friday at Nashua South for a 6 p.m. start.
