# Win would give Milford girls shot at playoffs

Steve Signor stood in a hallway at Souhegan High School and proclaimed that his Milford girls basketball team still had a shot at making the Division II playoffs.

Never mind that the Spartans had just lost to the Sabers by 22 points, their 10th loss of what would be an 11-game losing streak, Signor believed Milford could win enough in its final seven games to get into the postseason for the fourth straight year.

The Spartans lost their next game to fall to 1-11, but then it happened - Milford started winning.

The Spartans won their next four games before losing to John Stark last Friday, and with one game left in the regular season, Milford (5-12) could get into the playoffs by beating Bishop Brady (3-14) Tuesday night and getting some help.

"It's a huge day for us," Signor said. "They feel the pressure and know they need to take care of business."

The Spartans host the Giants at 6:30 p.m. for Senior Night, and if Milford does win, it will have to wait two days to find out if its in the Division II playoffs. That's when Plymouth (6-11), currently in the 16th and final playoff spot, hosts Merrimack Valley (15-2), which defeated Plymouth 68-33 earlier this season.

"The bottom line is we have to take care of business first," Signor said. "All season, we've been talking about that as our goal, to make the playoffs. We knew it would be tough, that we had a tough schedule. Based on the teams and the schedule, we thought if we could win five of six here, we'd have a good shot."

That the Spartans have a shot at all is a bit of surprise. Milford suffered some injuries and illness early in the season that left an small roster even more shorthanded for much of the season. For a while, Signor had to start more than one freshmen, and even now that the team is close to full-strength, the first two players off the bench are freshmen.

"We have three seniors," Signor said. "One, after the first game, was out with an illness for an extend period. One has really bought into the system after having the same coach since sixth grade. They're all really buying into it and their basketball IQ has been raised tremendously."

The players' confidence has gone up all season, too, despite the losses. Milford played in the Nashua North Holiday Tournament, going 1-2, but playing Merrimack and North close in those two defeats.

"We had a lot of freshmen playing a lot of minutes, and it was a definite confidence builder," Signor said. "We've played a lot of tough teams, and despite the scores, we were in just about every game. We had a couple of slipups, but against Souhegan, we were down four. We had Hollis/Brookline close. Oyster River, with a couple of minutes left, it was a couple of possessions game. I think the girls believe they could play with anybody."

A Milford win and a Plymouth loss would leave both teams at 6-12, but Milford would get the edge because of more wins on the road (4-2). Under the points system being used by the NHIAA this year, road wins count for one more point than home wins (5-4).

"This last week of practice has probably been the best week," Signor said. "They know we have to win. We've had a great season and we're not ready to finish."
