WILTON- Defense has been something the Wilton-Lyndeborough High School boys basketball team has worked to improve all season.

Friday against Colebrook Academy, all that worked paid off for the Warriors.

No. 4 WLC held No. 5 Colebrook scoreless for nine-and-a-half minutes in the first half and built a commanding lead in the third quarter to beat the Mohawks 73-51 in the Division IV quarterfinals. It's the second year in a row the Warriors have knocked the Mohawks out of the tournament, and its the first time since 2008 that WLC is in the semifinals.

The Warriors will take on No. 1 Littleton, which escaped with a one-point win over No. 8 Woodsville, in the semis Monday at 7 p.m. at Plymouth State University.

Jordan Litts led the Warriors (16-4) with 33 points while Trey Carrier was also in double figures with 12 points and Casey Lane came off the bench to add 11 points.

But it was the defense that led the way in the first half, as WLC went on a 20-0 run over a 9:30 stretch that spanned both quarters and turned a 5-4 deficit into a 24-5 lead.

"For three quarters, we played our best basketball of the year," WLC coach Ken Garnham said. "Defensively, we were tough. We have worked man-to-man defensive since day one. We weren't good at it initially. We just started to figure things out and get some of the principles of it the last couple of weeks, and I felt, at the right time. (Friday) we did a great job."

Garnham preached taking pride in defense to the players, and it took until midway through the season, but the Warriors bought in, according to Litts.

"We practiced defense quite a bit," he said. "Coach told us we had to start taking it personally out there. When your guy scores on you, you've got to get angry about it and say I'm not going to let you score again. We knew we had to play some lockdown defense on them and go full out, because that's what wins."

WLC struggled early on on the defensive boards, but despite getting second – and even third chances – Colebrook couldn't take advantage. A 3-pointer by Creed Conney (eight points) put the Mohawks up 5-4 with 5:19 left in the first quarter, their only lead of the game.

The Warriors regained the lead on a three-point play from Litts and got 3-pointers from Ty Carrier (nine points) and Lane sandwiched around a layup by Duncan Rae to lead 15-5 at the end of the first.

It was more of the same in the second quarter, and as the Warriors were making baskets, Colebrook was missing all its shots, including free throws. The Mohawks were just 1 of 8 from the line in the first half.

Two free throws from Litts – who was 10 for 10 in the first half and 12 for 12 for the game – put WLC up 30-10 late in the second, but a 3 by Sedrick McKinnon (25 points) and a basket by Michael Hastings helped Colebrook close the lead to 18 at the half.

WLC opened the third on a 15-0 to stretch the lead to 33 points, but Colebrook held a 27-16 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to close the gap.

"In the fourth it got helter skelter," Garnham said. "They scored 27 points in the fourth and we had held them to 24 (in the first three quarters). I thought that if we came out fast, we could beat this team comfortably. I saw them on film, but we played them last year and we knew the players they had. We just did a nice job."

The Warriors will face a Littleton (19-1) team that has won 15 games in a row, including the playoffs. No. 3 Epping (16-4) and No. 2 Derryfield (19-1) will play in the other semifinal at 5:30 p.m.

"It feels great," Litts said of advancing to the semifinals. "I watched from the stands last year in the semifinals and I told Coach we had to be there this year. It's just a great feeling to know we put in the work to accomplish where we are."
