WILTON - The Wilton-Lyndeborough High School boys basketball team took control of Tuesday night's game against Newmarket in the second quarter. The Warriors outscored the Mules by 10 points to take a 13-point lead into halftime, doubled that lead after the third quarter and cruised to a 63-34 victory in Division IV action. The biggest surprise wasn't that WLC put up so many points - it was only two fewer than the Warriors' season average - but rather who was doing the scoring. Jordan Litts led WLC (7-1) with 14 points, but half of those came in the game's first minute, the rest on a 3-pointer in the second and two layups in the third. The other 30 points came from the rest of the Warriors, as three other players scored in double figures. Ty Carrier added 12 points for WLC while Casey Lane had 11 and Trey Carrier chipped in with 10. "We have the kid everybody knows about in Jordan Litts," WLC coach Ken Garnham said. "It helps because teams can't load up on him and just take him out of it, because now they'll pay a price with the Carrier brothers and the Lane kid and Duncan (Rae) and so forth. "They can score, so it makes it a lot easier for us to run an offense. I think they scouted us and knew the other kids could play, so I think Jordan had a flat shooting night, but he was good in other areas of the game. Balanced scoring allows you to do other things and makes it a lot tougher for the other teams to play." Newmarket (4-5) kept things close early on, coming back from WLC's 9-0 run to start the game with a 10-4 run that made it a three-point game at the end of the first quarter. But after that, the Warriors stepped on defense and rebounding, and the effort waned for the Mules. "We just don't play with effort," Newmarket coach Jamie Hayes said. "We practice harder than we play in the games. I've never seen that before and I don't understand it. They have a lot of size and weapons, but we're not pleased with our compete level right now." Vinny Khounxay led the Mules with eight points and Alex Souvannaseng hit two 3-pointers for six points. Newmarket scored just 14 points combined in the second and third quarters as the Warriors pulled away. "I think our defense, from the second quarter on, clamped down and they had problems scoring inside and we created a lot of turnovers for easy baskets," Garnham said. "We had some key offensive rebounds at times when the game was still close. We had rebounds off missed layups that were pretty crucial. We haven't had that really for a while and that makes you that much tougher and stronger."
