White's big second half helps Souhegan girls top Milford

MILFORD - Jane White scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as the Souhegan High School girls basketball team broke open a close game late to defeat Milford 54-43 Tuesday night.

White had 13 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the final six minutes of the game, and Christan Wojtas added 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half for the Sabers (3-0 in Division II).

Dina Pitsas led Milford with 18 points, all but three of which came in the first half, as the Spartans (1-3) held the lead for most of the first quarter. Milford led by as many as four points and was up 14-13 with 33.4 seconds left in the quarter, but the Sabers scored the final four points of the frame to go up 16-14.

Souhegan to its biggest lead of the first half, 24-18, just 41 seconds before halftime. But a putback by Pitsas cut the lead to four, and after two missed free throws by Wojtas, Pitsas hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 24-23 at the break.

The Sabers stretched the lead out to five early in the third quarter, but Milford again closed it to one, 30-29. The Spartans had a few chances to take the lead, but turned the ball over three times and missed two free throws and Souhegan went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter.

Milford scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but White's free throws down the stretch helped the Sabers increase the lead to double digits late in the quarter.

Although White was 13-of-18 from the line for the game, the Sabers were just 19-of-36 as a team. Lauren Cordts also had eight points for Souhegan, while Milford's Jennifer Dupuis had 13 points, including three 3s.

Both teams are back on the court on Friday, as Souhegan travels to Dover to face St. Thomas and Milford hosts Pelham.
