LONDONDERRY - No helmets, no pads, and in some cases, not even a shirt.

From a distance Friday, it was hard to tell who was out on the practice fields at Londonderry High School, but it was clear what was happening.

Football was back, and so was the summer heat, giving the first official practice for the Lancers more of an offseason look.

"A lot of the offseason stuff, there’s more of it," Londonderry senior Colby Ramshaw said of his and his teammates' attire. "The heat was an issue to begin with. We’ve been prepped for this, whether that’s having a great diet and nutrition, or getting water, I feel like we were pretty prepared."

Many of the Londonderry players and coaches relished the opportunity, not only to get acclimated to the scorching weather, but to be out for a practice that felt a little bit more normal than a year ago.

"It’s tough but it makes the team tougher," Londonderry senior Brian Barbaro said. "It’s what we need. We played a game in Salem last year in the playoffs, it was our hottest game of the year and we didn’t really see anything like that. It’s going to help out a lot."

In 2020, teams in New Hampshire weren't allowed to start practice until after Labor Day - more than three weeks later than usual - because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That late start, and other restrictions, led to some changes to the way Londonderry coach Jimmy Lauzon likes to introduce things to the players.

"When I went back to look at how we installed things last year, it was totally different," the coach said. "It wasn’t on our install scheduled that we normally do. We couldn’t do double sessions, which was a huge part for us to grow together as a team."

"I personally love (the heat) and I think our kids do, too. We train hard in the summer time, but granted, it’s usually early in the morning, so it’s not that hot. I don’t think it bothered us much. It’s not like the old-school, two-and-a-half hour, full pads, twice a day (practice). We did the best we could. We’re just excited to be out there, we’ll take any weather."

Lauzon estimates the number of kids who came out for football is around 100-110, which has been normal during his tenure as Lancers' head coach.

"It was a great first practice," Lauzon said. "Not anything we didn’t expect. They had a great camp, they had a great summer, and they’re a hard-working group of kids who bring a lot of energy. A lot of that standard has been set in the past."

Ramshaw, who is a tight end and linebacker, learned that standard as a sophomore in 2019, when the Lancers went undefeated and won the Division I title. The senior hopes its something his class can quickly pass on to the players coming up.

"I wanted to see how well we work together," he said. "Throughout this, I want to see how well we’re able to be together and communicate and be a team. This is all on how well we can be a team. Being able to understand, the guy next to you is your brother."

Londonderry will have its first scrimmage on Aug. 21, and between now and then, Barbaro, who is a lineman, hopes to see everyone continue to work hard until the Lancers can start full contact drills.

"You just hope to see hustle," he said. "We’re a bunch of hungry guys and we’re ready to hit right now. The attendance all summer has been amazing. Even the non-mandatory stuff, everyone is coming out here. Everyone wants to get better and make this team better."
