MANCHESTER - Team West let everyone know what kind of game it was going to be on its first defensive stand of Saturday's CHaD East-West All-Star Football game.

With Team East facing a third-and-3 at West's 4-yard line, the defense stepped up to make two big tackles, holding the East out of the end zone on that possession and every one after that.

West held East scoreless while quarterback Joe Mikol threw two touchdown passes and the West rolled to a 26-0 win for its second-straight win over the East at Saint Anselm College.

Mikol was 11 of 19 passing for 220 yards and two scored, as the Bedford senior was named the Bo Dickson Most Valuable Player, and Kyle Crampton (Merrimack) and Nyeoti Punni (Lebanon) each had a rushing touchdown for West.

"It’s nice having everyone on the field being the best in the state," Mikol said. "Everyone here is the best of the best and when everyone like that comes together, we mesh really well. We’re able to do some great things."

Crampton also saw time at quarterback for West, completing 5 of 9 passes for 56 yards and he also had 26 yards on the ground. Punni led West with 43 yards rushing, 31 of which came on his fourth-quarter touchdown run.

After Crampton gave West a 7-0 lead with 8:36 left in the second quarter, Mikol led a quick scoring drive on the team's next possession, needing three plays to go 68 yards. The drive opened with a 52-yard catch-and-run from Mikol to Jonah Lopez (Goffstown), and two plays later, the quarterback connected with high-school teammate Andrew Grudinskas for a 14-yard touchdown.

"We’ve been playing together and we’ve had so many of those type of plays," Mikol said. "It was nice to get another one. Obviously, we wanted one, but we didn’t talk about it specifically. It was nice to get it."

The point after was no good, keeping it 13-0 West, but Mikol and Shea Goodwin (Merrimack) extended the lead in the third quarter, as Goodwin took a short pass from Mikol 77 yards for a touchdown and a 19-0 lead. Goodwin finished with five catches for 111 yards.

"I just had to get inside the cornerback and I had an opening," Goodwin said. "Joe hit me and I turned my head upfield, saw that I was free to go and took off. The DB that was on me kind of clipped my heels and I had to catch my balance a little bit. Once I got my balance, I knew I had it."

The defense made that lead feel even bigger than it was. The West had an edge in yards, 420-253, and the East had just 68 yards on the ground on 33 attempts.

West opened the game with a 11-play, 53-yard drive, but turned the ball over on downs at the East 36.

The East responded by moving deep into West territory, thanks in part to a 48-yard completion from Nathan Campos (Pinkerton) to Colby Ramshaw (Londonderry) that put the East at the 11-yard line. Two plays later, on third-and-3 from the 4, Aidan McDonald (Salem) carried outside, but Punni came up to make the tackle for a gain of just 2.

On fourth-and-1, the West defense came up big, just barely.

"They could have gotten a first down there," West coach Robin Bowkett (Souhegan) said. "They literally took a credit card to measure that thing. We felt really good about it. We didn’t have great field position early on in the game, but we were getting first down. We were getting us out of tough situations, so we had a chance to punt and change the field position a little bit."

The goalline stand in the first quarter gave West some momentum, as did another defensive stop going into halftime. East looked to answer the Grudinskas touchdown, getting down to the West 17-yard line for one final play with five seconds left in the half.

East quarterback Darian Lopez-Sullivan (Dover) connected with Thomas Ahlers (Salem) but Logan Barnhill (Milford) made the tackle right away to end the half.

"The one right before the half was pretty good," Bowkett said. "We almost took a timeout there with five seconds left, but we had it covered up, we felt pretty good. We thought let’s not give them a chance to see what we’re in if we felt good about it. We did and tackling him before the end zone was great."

Ahlers led East with 38 yards rushing and he added five catches for 57 yards while Ramshaw also had five receptions for 70 yards. Lopez-Sullivan was 13 of 25 for 137 yards, but he and Campos were sacked a combined five times.

East had its best chance to score in the second half on the opening drive, getting inside the West 10-yard line, but a sack on third down set up an incomplete pass on fourth and turnover on downs.

Bowkett credited a couple of guys playing unfamiliar positions as to why the West was so successful up front.

"Guys like (Caden) Zalenski (Milford), guys like Myles Rheinhardt (Bow), who hadn’t played a lot of defensive line before," the coach said. "We had a feeling that they were going to be studs on defense and they were. We did a great job utilizing all of our players and keeping guys as fresh as possible."
