HAMPTON - Efficiency on both sides of the ball, offensive production from multiple players and a near shutout from the defense.

Dante Laurendi couldn’t have drawn up a better season opener for the Nashua High School North football team.

The Titans scored all their points before Winnacunnet could even get a sniff of the end zone in what amounted to a 35-8 drubbing on Friday night. Curtis Harris and Xavier Provost each scored twice for North, while the Titans’ front seven smothered the Warriors veer offense, which produced 97 yards on the ground overall.

“We’ll take it,” Laurendi said. “With the crazy preseason, you see a lot of rust and people trying to feel for who they are. I think we had that on both teams and a lot of people around the state doing the same thing.”

The rust was very much present in the opening quarter, where the two teams combined for 51 yards on three drives. However, it wasn’t long after that North began to find its stride, doing so with success in the running game.

Harris kickstarted the offense with a 66-yard score, turning on the jets up the left side after some slicing and dicing to make it 6-0\. Provost came out on North’s next drive and posted back-to-back 15-yard runs, of which the second came with an impressive juke on the last defender before the touchdown. Harris added a two-point conversion that staked North to a 14-0 edge into halftime.

The back-breaker came when North made it 21-0 just 16 seconds into the second half when Provost took the half’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. He went sideline to sideline to navigate the pack at midfield before running the final 45 yards untouched.

“We got deflated after what we thought was a pretty good kick,” first-year Winnacunnet coach Ryan Francoeur said. “It really was a great return. We pinned him on the (5-yard line) and then try to stay in our lanes, but the kid made some nice plays.”

Besides Harris, there was uncertainty around what kind of weapons North would have to step into a running attack that had seen plenty of success in recent years. Provost’s effort will likely warrant more touches going forward.

“He’s a guy we lost very early in the season last year. I think it might’ve been game No. 2,” Laurendi said of Provost. “We knew he could be very explosive. He’s a very good athlete and he’s shown us he can be pretty dynamic with the ball.”

Anthony Greene and Harris added scores from 19 yards and 5 yards later in the third quarter to send the game into running time with 1:28 left in the third quarter. Winnacunnet got its lone score on a 1-yard keeper from Elliot Beals with 12 seconds left in the game to avoid the shutout.

Harris paced North’s running attack with 104 yards on 11 carries while Greene posted 36 yards and Provost had 30 yards. Chris McClelland’s 28 yards rushing yards topped all Winnacunnet runners.

The Warriors appeared slow to hit holes, but North’s reads were a bigger problem for Winnacunnet. The Titans' defense had four sacks, a handful of tackles for a loss and recovered a fumble.

“We wanted to rally to the football, but we certainly didn’t expect to hold them like we did,” Laurendi said. “I thought we tackled well individually and as a team. We were fortunate that they helped us by forcing some turnovers, but our defense was definitely able to get into some favorable situations that pushed things.”
