The Sunapee High School and Wilton-Lyndeborough teams certainly looked it through the first quarter. The two combined for 12 turnovers and made just 3-of-13 free throws. The score was 2-2 with a little over three minutes left in the quarter. It was also the first action in a meaningful game for the officials, too. With 3:11 left in the first quarter, Sunapee was whistled for a foul – it’s seventh of the first half. Neither of the officials, nor the people at the scorers’ table, noticed until W-L was about to inbound the ball. The officials corrected themselves, and Sam Broderick made the front end of the one-and-one for the Warriors’ first free throw of the game. W-L would finish 15-of-27 from the free throw line and held on to win the game 49-39. “Over 50 percent in the first game, I’ll take it,” Warriors’ coach Denny Claire said. #### Shorthanded The Lakers were a semifinalist last season and are expected to be in contention for the Division IV title this season. But two of those players who will lead the way – Liza Bourdon and Allison Tenney – are sidelined with injuries. Knowing that, the Warriors turned their focus to containing Sunapee’s Molly Puchtler and keeping someone on her following a W-L basket. “When we did score, we ran a box-and-one, when we didn’t score we ran a two-three (zone),” Claire said. “We knew where she was and they were looking for her. Alex (Bosquet) did a good job.” In the first half, Puchtler had 11 points, including two 3-pointers, but she picked up four fouls in a three-minute span in the third quarter. Sunpee’s Abby Armstrong also played most of the game in foul trouble, having picked up four in the first half. Armstrong scored all 12 of her points in the fourth quarter when the Lakers were making a comeback. “They got themselves in foul trouble and that hurt them,” Claire said. “Not having their best two players really hurt them. But hey, you can’t take it away from us. It doesn’t say who played or didn’t play.” #### Back on the floor The Warriors return to the court on Monday, when they travel to Hinsdale for a 7 p.m. start. The Wilton-Lyndeborough boys team will open its season on Friday, as will some of the area Division I girls teams. The Warriors will host a doubleheader on Friday against Pittsfield, with the girls tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys following at 7 p.m. In Division I, the Merrimack girls will host Bishop Guertin on Friday at 7 p.m., while Nashua North travels to Alvirne for a 7 p.m. start. Wrestling also gets underway this week, with the first dual matches taking place on Wednesday. This season, teams are divided into three divisions. Nashua North, Nashua South and Bishop Guertin remain in Division I, while Merrimack and Alvirne moved down to Division II to join Milford, Souhegan, Hollis/Brookline and Bedford. North hosts Concord and South hosts Pinkerton on Wednesday, with both matches starting at 7 p.m. Alvirne heads to Spaulding while Souhegan and Windham are at Campbell. Bedford travels to Merrimack and H/B hosts Goffstown while Timberlane is at Bishop Guertin. All matches start at 7 p.m.
