MILFORD - The Milford High School football team rumbled and pounded its way to a 35-12 victory over Manchester West using the experienced running game of quarterback Gavin Urda.

The first half was dominated by the Milford ground game. Using a triple-option scheme, the Spartans were able to rip apart the Blue Knights defense repeatedly.

The game’s first score came with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Urda took the keeper straight through the West defense for the walk in touchdown. The touchdown would be one of many on the night for Urda, and gave the Spartans the 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, West’s Brett Michaud was able to gash the Spartan coverage team with an excellent return all the way into Spartans' territory, down to the Milford 20-yard line. But the Milford defense held firm and surrendered no points and the Spartans next drive was carried once again by Urda.

Urda carried the ball for more than 40 yards on the drive and the offensive explosion carried the Spartans all the way down to the Blue Knight 5-yard line.

Fullback Junior Ughu carried defenders 5 yards into the end zone to give Milford the 14-0 lead. West would have an opportunity to answer on the following drive, but a failed fourth-down conversion turned the ball back to the Spartans with just over three minutes to play in the half.

On the first play of the drive, Urda ripped off a 30-yard run to set the Spartans up in Blue Knights territory on the first play of the drive and eventually finished off the drive himself with another quarterback keeper to give Milford a 21-0 lead.

West was able to piece together a nice drive before the end of the half, as quarterback Michaud finished off a long drive with a touchdown run with just seconds to go until halftime. A missed two-point conversion would leave the score 21-6 heading into the break.

The second half was dominated once again by the Spartans, as the focus in the second half looked to be chewing up as much clock as possible.

Milford used a strong defensive approach, shutting down the Blue Knights time and time again. With Urda as their main weapon, the Spartans eventually added two more scores on the ground, boosting their lead to 35-6.

Again, in the winding moments, the Blue Knights were able to run in for the touchdown, finding the end zone with 41 seconds left in the game.
