NASHUA - When Cameron Owen looked at the Nashua High School South girls basketball team, he saw a lot things that reminded him of his Trinity squad.

In Thursday night's game against the Panthers, the Pioneers did a lot of the things South likes to do to opposing teams, and it worked.

Starting with its full-court press, Trinity outscrapped South for the better part of three quarters, and when the Panthers made a run, the Pioneers answered with a big fourth quarter to take a 56-42 win in Division I action.

With the game tied at 29 going into the fourth quarter, Trinity opened the final frame with an 18-7 run to take a double-digit lead. Addison Moynihan had eight of her game-high 17 points during the run to help the Pioneers bounce back from a tough loss their previous time out.

Jodi Erilla was also in double figures with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Nayeli Perez recorded nine markers for Trinity, which was coming off a two-point loss against Bishop Guertin on Tuesday.

“It was a such a tight game (against Bishop Guertin) and we kind of wanted to just make this one our win,” Moynihan said. “We just want to show everyone that we’re here and we want to put our all into it.”

The Pioneers (3-2 in D1) from the start, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, and Trinity never trailed throughout the game.

“We knew that they were going to come out, they were going to full-court press us,” Owen said. “We needed to play our game, and in order to do that, we wanted to speed them up. We knew it was going to be a very similar game between the two (teams.”

South (5-1) got 15 points from Nicole De Jesus while Anya Challinger came off the bench to add nine points and Maggie Gallagher added eight for the Panthers, who were playing their second game in as many days.

“Trinity earned it,” South coach John Bourgeois said. “We were reverting to bad habits when we’re tired, when there’s a lot happening, when they’re pressing. It’s a battle. We’re going against a team that is scrappy, too. In those (tough) moments, you revert to bad habits, and that’s what happened to us.”

In the first half, it seemed every time the Panthers looked like they were going to take control, they'd get close, and the Pioneers would have an answer. South cut the lead to 8-7 late in the first, but Trinity responded with a 6-0 run to go up 14-7 early in the second quarter.

The Pioneers took an 18-15 lead into halftime and stretched it to a 10-point lead on a 3 by Erilla with just under five minutes remaining in the third.

But South went on a run of its own, sparked by a putback by Nitzann Alkalay, as the Panthers outscored the Pioneers 13-3 over the rest of the third to tie it at 29 going to the fourth.

“I just reminded them we’ve been in this situation before,” Owen said. “We have to weather the storms, stay composed, and don’t let the other team get us out of our comfort zone. We saw them be a little bit more patient in the fourth and we’ve really put an emphasis on advancing the ball up the court through passing as opposed to dribbling.”

Perez hit a 3 to open the quarter and then traded baskets with De Jesus. Moynihan then scored twice, sandwiched around a 3 by De Jesus, and after a timeout and a turnover by South, Perez scored and Erilla hit a 3 to give Trinity a 43-34 lead with 5:08 left.

De Jesus scored for South but Moynihan added two more baskets, with Sophia Gonzalez coming up with a block on the possession in between for the Pioneers.

“At halftime we talked about how we needed to step up and just play basketball when things don’t go our way,” Moynihan said. “We figured out how to just play the game and play as a team.”

The Panthers were able to get the lead down six, 47-41, with 3:41 remaining, but the Pioneers pushed it back to 10 moments later and were 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the final minute to put the win away.
