That doesn't mean the trio of Tate Flint, Ethan Flannigan and Andrew Overy didn't know what they were supposed to do. The three attackmen accounted for seven goals and six assists for the Pioneers, as they picked up a 9-2 win over Pelham in the Division III opener for both teams at Derryfield Park in Manchester. Flint scored four goals and added an assist while Flannigan had a goal and three helpers and Overy had two goals and two assists. All three scored in the first quarter, as Trinity (1-0) took a 4-0 lead after one. "We have eight assists and nine goals," Trinity coach Mike Martinez said. "Even though our attack is young, they know how to play. Between Tate, Andrew and Ethan, they worked extremely well together. Our biggest strength is going to be getting that ball, getting up the field, and being in transition." Austin Pepin also had a goal for Trinity while Brady Watts had a goal and an assist and was 12 for 12 on faceoffs. Brennan Walsh also had an assist and Dylan Purdy and Nick Guerra each had four saves. Pelham (0-1) got goals from Tyler Katin and Keegan McKenney in the second quarter to cut Trinity's lead to 4-2, but the Pythons couldn't find the back of the net the rest of the day. Cameron Cooke had an assist for Pelham. "It was good to get out," Pelham coach Will Delanoy said. "We have a pretty young team, so there are a lot of guys who are new to the system and learning how to do new things. We didn’t have that much time to play anyways, given all the circumstances. It was good to get out, run around, and play lacrosse." The Pythons also got 12 saves from senior goalie Jon Savage, who was playing his first game in goal. "We didn’t have a goalie coming into the season, so I was like ‘hey, guys, who wants to play?'" Delanoy said. "He stepped up and said I’ll play. He’s been working really hard. To have double-digit saves the first time out is really good." Savage had a couple in the first quarter, as did Guerra at the other end, to keep the game scoreless until Flint got his first of the game with 5:53 left in the opening frame. Overy made it 2-0 with 4:15 to go and back-to-back goals by Flint and Flannigan just six seconds apart made it 4-0 with 25.2 seconds left in the first. Katin put Pelham on the board 3:14 into the second quarter and McKenney made it 4-2 less than two minutes later. A late hit on Trinity on the goal gave the Pythons the ball back with a chance to cut the lead to one, but Pelham wasn't able to capitalize on the manup and Flint scored with 4:25 remaining in the half to give the Pioneers a 5-2 lead. Neither team did much to start the second half, but Trinity added three more goals in the final six minutes, including one from Watts with 44.9 remaining in the quarter to make it 8-2. "It’s a huge deal," Martinez said of Watts' play on the afternoon. "He went 12 for 12 because he was out for one of them to take a breather. We’ve been blessed that we’ve had good faceoff guys come through here. Brady is a different being." Overy finished out the scoring with 4:23 remaining in the game. The teams will meet again at 4 p.m. Thursday at Pelham.
