NASHUA - For the Trinity High School boys hockey team to play its best defense, coach Mike Connell felt the team needed to be at full strength on the ice.

But in the second period Wednesday against Nashua North, the Pioneers were pretty good even with a few guys in the penalty box.

Trinity overcame five penalties in the middle stanza, including an extended five-on-three for the Titans, and rallied for a strong third period in a 6-3 win over North at Conway Arena.

Six different players had goals for the Pioneers (4-3 in Division I), led by Josh Beaumont and Kyle Valliere, who had a goal and two assists each. Patrick Swanson and Drew Merrick also had a goal and an assist apiece, while Ryan Slatky made 13 saves, including a couple during North's two-man advantage.

"Slatky came up with a couple of great gloves saves," Connell said. "The second period, a ton of penalties, and no one could get a good flow there. I was proud that the guys came out in the third period playing solid hockey."

The Pioneers entered the third with a 3-2 lead, after North's Jake Latham had scored with 14 seconds left in the second period. Valliere made it a two-goal lead with 8:08 left to play, and Merrick made it 5-2 less than two minutes later.

"I thought we played hard for most of the game," North coach Dan Legro said. "Trinity is a good team. I wish it went a different way, but I'm not disappointed in my players."

But the Titans (1-6) were frustrated by not being able to take advantage of their opportunities in the second period.

"They have an aggressive penalty kill, maybe more aggressive than some teams," Legro said. "Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance in the third to have the power play opportunities that we had in the second to try to do something different. It was frustrating, but all we can do is learn from it."

Adam Murphy and Tim Paige also had goals for North, while Robert Lavine had two assists and goalie Jake Genest made 12 saves.

Paige's goal came with 3:31 left in the game to make it 5-3, and it seemed to give the Titans a little life. But Trinity's defense held the rest of the way, and Mitch Myers gave the Pioneers an empty-net goal in the final seconds.

"It's a good confidence builder," Connell said. "When you can kill off (five-on-threes), it's a momentum changer. It takes a lot out of a team. That will carry over."
