Instead, the Pioneers trailed Bedford by just four points after the first 16 minutes, and Farmer told them, they hadn't even played their brand of basketball. No. 3 Trinity kept it close early in the third quarter, and when the moment presented itself, the Pioneers pounced, going on a 13-3 run to end the frame to take the lead for good on the way to a 60-46 win over No. 2 Bedford at the James W. Foley Memorial Community Center in Rochester. The Pioneers (18-3) move on to the D1 title game at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the University of New Hampshire, where they will face No. 4 Pinkerton, which knocked off top-seeded Portsmouth in the other semifinal. It's the first final for Trinity since 2022, when it beat Goffstown to win the title. Going in at halftime, it didn't look to Farmer that his team thought it was going to be playing another game. “We look defeated,” the coach said. “From the first play of that game, we look defeated, and that's not the men that I've been coaching for three years straight. That's not who we are. I said, now let's come out here and be who we're supposed to be. “I asked them, what type of team are we? They know we’re a defensive team. We’re going to come out and play defense. Our defense will be our offense. We’ll win this game handedly and that’s exactly what we did.” Connor Cote finished with a game-high 15 points, as he went 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to help the Pioneers put the game away. Derek Erilla was 7 of 8 at the line and had 12 points and Jaydan Auguste scored six of his 10 points off the bench in the second half after Jordan Torres picked up his fourth foul midway through the third. The Pioneers looked like they might be in trouble at that point, going down four points moments later after a couple of empty possessions. But in the blink of an eye, momentum flipped. It started with 3-pointer by Erilla, then a steal by the senior, who found Auguste in transition for a basket and a 30-29 lead. Then Jamar Gregory-Alleyne jumped a pass near midcourt and took off with the steal, going in alone for a layup. Bedford (18-3) answered with a basket by Logan O'Connell (14 points) but Auguste came right back to score for Trinity. Then Gregory-Alleyne poked the ball away from O'Connell to set up another breakaway layup, and after a miss by the Bulldogs, Cote scored to put the Pioneers up 38-31 in the final seconds of the third quarter. “We could all feel the momentum,” Gregory-Alleyne said. “We all got up. The bench dropped even more energy and we just felt it.” Ryan O'Rourke (11 points) hit one of two free throws before the end of the quarter, but a jumper by Auguste opened the scoring in the fourth and gave Trinity a 40-32 lead. “We definitely went in slow,” Cote said of the start. “We were a little nervous, but we flipped the switch and we knew what we had to do coming down the stretch.” Bedford was able to climb back in it, going on a 9-3 run to cut the Trinity lead to two, 43-41, with just under five minutes remaining. But Cote hit a 3 to put the Pioneers back up five, and the senior, along with Erilla and Connor Bishop combined to go 14 of 16 at the foul line over the final two minutes to put the game away. “That’s all we do in practice is run, run, run, run and take more free throws,” Farmer said. “CC down the stretch, I can’t say it enough about how many free throws he made. We needed every single one of them.”
