EXETER - Will Towner knew the moment the ball left his stick, he and the Trinity High School boys lacrosse would be celebrating in a moment.

Trinity's Will Towner gets double-teamed by Pelham's Zach Massiello, right, and Michael Calistro during Saturday's championship game.

Towner scooped up a ground ball along the sideline, protected it as he raced toward the Pelham goal and fired a shot that found the back of the net to give the No. 2 Pioneers a 7-6 overtime victory to beat the No. 1 Pythons in the Division III championship game Saturday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

The goal came with 1:45 left in the extra session, after both teams had had good scoring opportunities, and it was the fifth of the game for Towner.

"It was a loose ball and just called 'ball,' scooped it up and went it," he said. "It was good communication with me and my teammates. I knew the defender was coming back and I knew he was going to slash, so I just pulled my stick back and shot it."

The goal was part of a second-half comeback that saw Trinity (17-1) outscore Pelham (18-2) 6-3 in after halftime. The Pioneers tied the game twice in the fourth quarter, making it 6-6 with 5:11 left to play, and never led until the end.

"It feels amazing," Towner said. "Going through a lot of emotions right now and it feels good."

Jacob Eldred and Will Shephard also had a goal each for Trinity and goalie Garrett Kolden played well down the stretch.

Pelham got two goals each from Luke Tracy and Nick Wolfrom while Bryce Blanchard and Tim Callahan also scored.

The Pythons led 2-1 after one quarter and 3-1 going into halftime. Wolfrom scored 41 seconds into the third quarter to make it a three-goal lead, and it was 5-2 Pelham after Callahan scored with 4:08 to go in the frame.

But Towner and Shepard scored 20 seconds apart, making 5-4 with 2:49 to go until the fourth, and Eldred tied the game 5-5 just 1:08 in the final quarter.

The championship is the first for Trinity, and avenged a 9-8 loss to Pelham during the regular season.
