The Nashua High School North football went to something it hadn’t used since last season to beat Pinkerton Academy last week.

Leading 14-0 at halftime and unable to move the football at times, the Titans moved in a tight end and loaded up on their running game, going the entire second half without throwing the ball.

The formation was one that North doesn’t use often, and hadn’t since last year’s Division I championship game loss to Salem.

“Even though we are a spread football team, we run the football first,” North coach Jason Robie said. “I think anybody that’s watched us knows that. We throw when it opens up and we have a very good quarterback in Brandon Karkhanis. We have receivers that can catch the ball and make things happen.

“We have strong, smart, physical linemen who know what they have to do up front. We have backs who are able to fall forward and make moves at the second level. It wasn’t something that was foreign to us, but we hadn’t done it yet this year. When things started stalling for us, we reinstalled it as part of a progression to our offense.”

The result was a breakout game for North’s Andre Williams, who rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Jahmar Gathright also added two rushing scores of his own.

While North hadn’t used its power formation in almost a year, the Titans (2-0 in Division I, 2-1 overall) may have to go to it again this week against Manchester Central (1-1, 2-1).

“They are a hard-nosed, physical, aggressive football team,” Robie said. “It’s probably going to be the most physical game that we’ve had. Not to take anything away from our prior opponents, but we know what we’re getting into. We had two battles with them last year. They’re an explosive team and they have some athletes. Their defense is very aggressive.”

Robie also knows that the Little Green will come into the game with a extra motivation after the Titans won both of last year’s meetings, including a win in the Division I semifinals.

“I’m sure they’re going to use that motivation,” he said. “They were three minutes away from a title game. For us, we want to prove we’re not a one-hit wonder. We want to show we’re a physical, strong football team. To do that, you’re going to have to beat a very good football team in Central.

“As a football fan, it’s going to be great to watch. You get excited to play in these games because it’s going to tell you who you are.”

The Titans and Little Green will square off at 7 p.m. Friday at Stellos Stadium in Nashua.
