Things were not going well for the Timberlane Regional High School girls volleyball team midway through the second set of Monday night's match against Nashua North.

After falling behind early in the first set, the Owls dropped the first one by 10 points, and were down again, this time by eight, as the Titans appeared to be in complete control.

But with Timberlane trailing 15-7, the Owls seemed to flip a switch, and behind the serving of Erin Matthews and Sam Carrigan, won 11 of the next 14 points and tied the game at 18.

Timberlane took its first lead of the match moments later, going up 22-21, and won the second game 25-22\. That momentum carried into the next set, as the Owls grabbed the lead and withstood a North comeback - the Titans took a 20-19 lead at one point - and all of a sudden, Timberlane had a 2-1 lead in a match where it looked like the Owls might get swept.

"We executed really well, we served the ball really well for long stretches of the match," Timberlane coach Sean Hogan said. "We got some offense going for the first time this year. I think played 13 girls and we’ve never done that. We might not have a lot of top-end offensive talent, but we have a lot of girls who can help."

With their backs again the wall, however, the Titans weren't done. North came roaring out in the fourth set, taking a 10-1 lead early before the Owls came back. Timberlane eventually went ahead, 19-16, but the Titans won the final nine points to force a fifth game.

"I was very happy with how the girls played," North coach Nicole Fitzgibbons said. "I thought they fought for every point and there were a lot of long, tough rallies that they stayed in. There’s not a lot more you can ask for when they’re diving and throwing themselves after balls."

The Owls (1-2) dominated the final set, winning 15-5, to take the match 3-2, getting their first win of the season, and handing North (2-1) its first loss.

"It was amazing," Timberlane's Ellie Schott said of the comeback win. "This is our third game and we hadn’t won, and just the fact that we were able to fight so hard and become closer together as a team, it made it so much better for us.

"I think we really just got our energy up. We realized that working as a team and being nice and loud made it easier to understand what the plays were that we wanted to make."

Schott finished with 17 assists, 14 kills and six aces to lead the Owls, while Carrigan had 24 digs, six kills and five aces and Tori Boutin had 27 digs.

"She’s come a long way," Hogan said of Schott. "She was our setter by trade, but she hit a little bit, and we’ve used her both ways. She's a dynamic player for us all of a sudden. And then we have the two in the back row (Carrigan) and (Boutin), who are tremendous. If more kids step up into that level, it’ll go a long way for us."

Timberlane entered the match having not played well on the road this season, and in year's past, particularly in a gym like the one at North.

"We have always had a hard time finding energy in this big gym," Hogan said. "We play in a bit of a dungeon and here, with the bright lights, it’s hard to adjust. We didn’t respond well to their student section."

For North, it was the first time this season it's gone more than three games in a match and that started to show at times late, according to Fitzgibbons.

"All around, a lot of the girls have to play the majority of the game and have to play a lot of front row and back row, which is a huge help to keep consistency," she said. "But it’s also tiring. That they can do it and still go to five (games) is inspiring."

Both teams are back in action Wednesday, as Timberlane travels to Londonderry and North goes to Hampton to play Winnacunnet.
