Evan Roeger remembers what it was like when the Timberlane Regional High School football team finished the 2019 season without a win.

Now, with one game left in the senior's high school career, the Owls have an opportunity to end up with another zero in their record.

Only this time, it would be in the loss column.

Top-seeded Timberlane plays for a championship for the first time since 2001 at 1 p.m. on Saturday, as it takes on No. 3 Milford in the Division II final, which will be played at Pinkerton Academy in Derry.

"It took a lot of work, going from 0-9 to 9-0 and continuing that through the playoffs," Roeger said. "It took a lot of dedication to our program. We had some success in the beginning of our football careers (before high school) playing together. It’s just taken a lot of teamwork and dedication to our sport."

The Owls (11-0) already own one win over the Spartans (8-2), having won the regular-season finale between the two teams 21-14 on Oct. 29\. Down 14-7 at halftime, Timberlane got two fourth-quarter touchdowns from Dominic Pallaria to take the lead and run out the clock late.

Timberlane coach Kevin Fitzgerald expected that game to be a physical one and it lived up to that expectation. Saturday should be no different.

"I came away thinking what I thought going in, they’re a good football team," the coach said. "They’re well-coached, they are physical, they’re backs are tough to bring down. They hit you defensively. They gave us all we could handle and then some, and that’s what we expected from them to be honest."

That was the closest game the Owls have had all season, as they've won games by an average of almost 32 points this season. The players came away with an important lesson from that contest

"We learned that the only score that matters is the score at the end of the game," senior Bryce Parker said. "As long as we keep fighting and doing what we’re supposed to be doing, we can have a good shot.

"It was a great feeling. When we were in the locker room at halftime, we were kind of down and not ourselves. When we came out, did our best, put all the effort into it and got the win."

While the Owls haven't faced as much adversity from their opponents, they dealt with some from within, as starting junior quarterback Dominic Coppeta was lost midseason to an injury and sophomore Garrett Shivell has stepped up.

"Gary has done an outstanding job for us," Fitzgerald said. "He’s a sophomore who works extremely hard. He’s diligent, he’s smart, he’s confident, he has done everything we’ve asked him to do. Our guys know Gary. He’s a varsity lacrosse player and played in the championship game last spring. The moment will not be too big for him. He showed up in the huddle and we went on business as usual."

Timberlane will be looking to win its first title since winning two of three from 1999-2001 in the old D2, but even getting to the final has been rewarding to the Owls.

"We’re one of four teams left playing in the state," the coach said. "We’re excited to be playing for a state championship on Saturday. We have a veteran group, guys who took their lumps when they were younger and now we’re a bit bigger and a bit stronger. Our physicality up front has been outstanding all year. We’ll look to ride that on Saturday."
