WINDHAM - It's that time of year where only one thing matters to Ken Blaszka: getting wins.

What it looks like, or how the Timberlane Regional High School boys lacrosse team goes about getting them, isn't something the Owls coach worries too much about.

Timberlane secured a big one Tuesday against Windham, taking control in the second quarter, and doing just enough of everything in the second half to hold off the Jaguars for a 9-7 win in a matchup between two teams in the top four of the Division II standings.

Michael Savage had all three of his goals in the first half for the Owls (10-2, No. 7 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll), and after Windham had cut the lead to two with under four minutes to play, Joe Hughes came up with a save that allowed Timberlane to run out most of the remaining time.

"Joe Hughes with that save at the end there when we needed it, after he just lets in three (goals) ...," Blaszka said. "All I care about at this time of year is winning. Our playoffs start now. This is it and everybody wants a piece of us. We’re a good team and everyone wants to be in our position, which is the way it’s supposed to be. They didn’t give up."

Landon Petry added two goals and two assists for Timberlane and Jack Condon also scored twice, as the pair scored 29 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to put the Owls up 9-5 with 5:28 remaining.

Rocco Psaris had a goal and an assist and Gary Shivell also scored while Austin Charest had two assists. Hughes and Bryce Carty combined for 15 saves.

Windham (11-3, No. 9) got three goals and two assists from Matt Desmarais while Ryan Parke and Nate Crowley had two goals apiece. Sam Kramer added two assists and Casey Kramer finished with 10 saves.

"We knew we were in for a battle with Timberlane," Windham coach Derek St. Cyr said. "They’re well-coached and disciplined. We knew ball control was going to be key to the outcome and we didn’t take good control of the ball in the first half. We fixed that in the second half and came back, but it wasn’t enough. When you get down against a good team like that, you’ve got to play beyond perfect."

The Jaguars had opportunities to take control of the game early, possessing the ball for nearly four minutes to open the first quarter. After the Owls were finally able to get possession, they wasted little time taking the lead on Savage's first goal with 7:56 left in the first.

It was still 1-0 a few minutes into the second quarter when Timberlane took control over a two-minute stretch. The Owls scored four times to take a 5-0 lead, and after Windham got on the board with just under five minutes to go until halftime, Savage scored to make it 6-1.

"I thought we could have scored more, but we hit a few pipes," Blaszka said. "And how many did their goalie stop? We knew coming in was it was going to be a good game for us."

Casey Kramer stopped six shots in the first half to keep things from getting out of hand for the Jaguars.

"He stopped so many shots right on the doorstep that he had no business stopping," St. Cyr said. "He’s been solid and been our anchor. He’s why we are where we are right now."

Windham was able to find the back of the cage twice in the third quarter, but early in the fourth is when the Jaguars started to make it interesting. Goals by Crowley and Parke made it a 7-5 game with 9:21 remaining.

Hughes, who typically plays the fourth quarter for Timberlane, bounced back with a pair of saves, and after Condon scored to make it 8-5, Charest found Petry for a four-goal lead with 5:28 to go.

But Windham's Rob DiPietro won the ensuing faceoff and took off. The ball eventually found Crowley, who put it away just nine seconds later to make it 9-6.

DiPietro control the faceoff again and Parke scored to make it 9-7 with 3:39 left to play, but despite another faceoff win, the Jaguars couldn't capitalize. Hughes came up with a save and Timberlane was able to keep possession most of the rest of the way to secure the win.

"We had them and then we gave them opportunities," Blaszka said. "We didn’t play smart. We were slow, sluggish, and it’s hot. They’re in the same position as us. We start to think we know what to do instead of what we’re coached to do. They’ve got a lot of athletes and they started to go back toward those athletes to try to do what they needed to do.

"All I care about is that we came out on top."
