Lindsey Hult and Madison Keating won a championship in every season they played for the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team.

But something about this year's team, which finished undefeated following a 20-3 win over Pinkerton Academy in the Division I championship game on June 8, was different.

"This team, there was no freshman, sophomore, junior, senior," Keating said. "It was one team. It doesn’t matter what age, how much playing time you got, how many goals you got, how many assists you got. It was just one team and we were so close on and off the field. I will never forget this team ever."

Not many will, as the Cardinals (19-0) did a lot of memorable things throughout the year. It was the first unbeaten year in the program's history, as Bishop Guertin averaged 16.5 goals per game and had a goal differential of plus-232.

Only once did the Cardinals fail to score double digit goals in a game and they had two games decided by three goals and one decided by two; no one else came within six goals and that happened just twice. In all, Bishop Guertin had 16 players on the roster who have committed or signed to play in college.

In the final, the team's depth was on full display. After Pinkerton scored the game's first goal, the Cardinals responded with a 7-0 run in which there were seven goal scorers.

"When we have so many different goal scorers, it’s not just one or two people," Keating said. "It’s everyone on offense, everyone is a threat. I think it’s hard to defend everyone, as opposed to face-guarding one or two people."

Leslie Why, who was in her first year as the Cardinals' varsity head coach in 2021, saw a different mentality on and off the field from the players.

"We are different this year," she said. "We’re calmer, we’re confident in what we can do. We do the work, we have a game plan, and we put in the hours to do it. When we get down a couple of goals, we don’t panic anymore. We don’t yell and scream from the sidelines."

A lot of that goes back to how well the players and coaches got along throughout the season.

"This is the closest we’ve ever been, from freshmen to seniors," Hult said. "If you walked into a practice, you wouldn’t be able to tell who is a freshman and who is a senior because we all just jived together and we’re all best friends."

Going through the shared experience of losing a season to COVID-19, and dealing with everything else that came along with the pandemic, helped the create a stronger bond among the Cardinals.

"I think it all started a little bit last year," Hult said. "We were always looking out for each other and checking up on each other. Making sure everyone was doing their workouts and staying healthy mentally and physically. I think it helped with that."

It also helped the Cardinals learn to be better with each other as not just teammates, but as classmates, friends and people.

"Known, valued, treasured," Why said. "That became what we did and how we treated each other. Never did they go after each other or blame each other. COVID also reinforces that because we had to do a lot of things remotely and together. The love and respect they have for each other and the connection sets them apart from other teams."
