NASHUA - The focus for the Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team this season has been consistency.

At the start of the third quarter Thursday night, the Cardinals were consistent from behind the 3-point line and it changed the game.

After trailing for most of the first half, Bishop Guertin opened the third by raining 3s on Exeter, hitting four in the first three minutes and seven total in the quarter to propel the Cardinals to a 76-64 win over the Blue Hawks in a Division I game at the Collignon Gymnasium.

Kayden Rioux and Holly Dufoe each had two of their five 3-pointers each to open the third and Laura Marino added back-to-back bombs midway through the quarter, as Bishop Guertin (5-3 in D1) outscored Exeter 25-14.

"Our biggest focus in building our identity has been consistency in what we do, whether it’s bringing energy or being able to rise above and persevere from challenges," Bishop Guertin coach Olivia Orlando said. "I was super proud of how they were able to come back out, recognize that basketball is a game of runs, and we had our run, and they kept going."

Rioux finished with a game-high 21 points while Dufoe added 18 points and Thalia Drapeau finished 12 points. Marino finished with eight markers despite battling foul trouble all night as the Cardinals made a dozen 3s.

The Blue Hawks (4-5), who led by as many as seven points in the first half, got a double double from Jessica Melick, as she had 17 points (three 3s) and 12 rebounds. Emma Gillis added 13 points and seven boards while Anna McGuinness had 13 points and six assists.

But despite scoring over its season average of 59.3 points, Exeter was unable to contain Bishop Guertin's shooters in the second half.

"We played really good defense in the first half and we played very good defense in the second half," Exeter coach Kaylene Rogers said. "BG just has very good shooters. They’re known for hitting 3-point shots. They were cold in the first half and in the second half, they came out and hit them."

While Rioux and Dufoe were connecting from the perimeter, Drapeau was doing her part to provide support inside for the Cardinals. The junior assisted on two of the team's 3s in the third, kicking the ball out, while also grabbing a couple of key rebounds down the stretch.

"(Drapeau) is always solid," Orlando said. "She’s one of our team captains and she’s one of those players who really will do what you ask of her. I asked them to be consistent, try to get downhill and get some easy bunnies there, and she was able to do that, work inside and be physical.

"She did a lot of intangibles. It was the kind of big plays that we need that don’t always show up on the stat sheet, but are just as important for a win."

McGuinness scored to open the third quarter and put Exeter up 35-28, but Bishop Guertin answered with a 3 by Rioux and a basket by Drapeau. Gillis scored to put the Blue Hawks back up four, but three straight 3s for the Cardinals gave them a 42-37 advantage and led to an Exeter timeout with 5:12 remaining in the quarter.

"It sets the tone when you’re able to make a run," Orlando said. "When things are going well, it’s really that much easier to have that positive energy. Exeter is a very talented team, and even when they punched back, our girls took it and were able to continue working hard."

Marino's 3-pointers made it 48-37 and Exeter was able to cut the lead down to six points going into the fourth, but the Blue Hawks wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
