NASHUA - With the Thornton Academy boys basketball team in need of a game-winning basket, there was one player for the Trojans to turn.

Jack Pyzynski took the ball with less than five seconds on the clock, got a couple of steps over midcourt and let fly a 3-pointer that would give his team a win or a loss in Saturday's Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament finale.

The buzzer sounded with the ball hitting the high point of its arc and the shot splashed through the net, giving the Trojans a 47-46 overtime win against Goffstown to win their second-straight tournament title at Nashua High School South.

"He’s a good shooter and he executed, so it was a great job by him," Thornton coach Bob Davies said. "We escaped with a win."

Pyzynski finished with a game-high 18 points for the Trojans, including four 3-pointers, while Peyton Jones added 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Thornton hit seven 3s, six of which came in the first half, but Goffstown was a few seconds away from taking the title after tying the game late in regulation.

A 3-pointer by Myles Green tied the game at 40 with three seconds to play, and after a Thornton timeout, Robenson Baguidy picked off the inbound pass and threw up a shot, but the ball was well off the mark as time expired.

"We were making shots and we were answering," Goffstown coach Ryan Cowette said. "We didn’t back down. We made big shots to keep ourselves in it. The lead climbed to nine at one point. The fact they see they can do it should help boost their confidence."

Derek Steckowych had 17 points, including five 3s, to lead the Grizzlies while Jack Kelly had 11 points and Baguidy added 10 points. But Goffstown was just 9 of 18 at the free throw line, including 3 of 7 in overtime; the teams combined to go 7 of 16 in the extra frame.

Both teams started well, trading the lead four times in the first quarter, and Goffstown tied it at 12 on a 3 by Samuel O'Hara to start the second. But Pyzynski started to heat up for Thornton, going on a 10-0 run of his own to put the Trojans up 22-12.

Steckowych finally put a stop to the run with a 3 of his own, and the senior hit a pair of free throws late in the quarter to make it 22-20, but Thornton was able to take a 28-22 lead into the half.

"We were in a game against another good team," Davies said of his team's mood at halftime. "That team is well-coached and we knew they weren’t going away."

Goffstown opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead and outscored Thornton, 14-5, in the quarter to take a 36-33 lead into the fourth. But the Trojans held the Grizzlies to a single free throw for the first 7:57 of the quarter to take a 40-37 lead, setting up Green's tying basket.

"It’s exactly what we drew up," Cowette said. "We dribbled to the opposite wing, TJ (Dutton) set a down screen for Myles (Green). We tell Myles every day in practice, he’s our best shooter and he shows it every single day, you’ve got to believe in yourself. I’m happy for him. We drew it up and we knocked it down."

Steckowych hit Goffstown's only field goal in overtime, sinking a 3-pointer with 1:08 left in the frame to give the Grizzlies a 44-41 lead. The teams traded free throws until Green made one of two with 4.9 seconds left to put Goffstown up 46-44, setting the stage for Pyzynski's game-winner.
