NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team needed to find a way to get its offense going Wednesday against Duxbury.

After scoring a season-low four goals in the first half, the Cardinals found themselves in a tie game with the Dragons early in the third quarter, when they finally broke through.

Kyle Fisher took a pass from Brennan McInnis and raced down the middle of the field, trying to get Bishop Guertin out ahead of Duxbury in transition. The long-stick middie saw Sam Prunier cutting to the front of the Dragons' net and Fisher tried to hit him with a pass.

Prunier couldn't come up with the ball, but distracted Duxbury goalie Teddy Griffin just enough that the errant pass got by everyone and found the back of the net.

That gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead and started them on a 6-0 run over the next four minutes as Bishop Guertin rolled by Duxbury for a 13-7 win at Stellos Stadium. The win moves the Cardinals (17-0) one game closer to a perfect regular season, which they can finish off Thursday against Concord.

"Sometimes you just need something like that to go your way," Bishop Guertin senior Brian Cameron said of Fisher's goal. "That’s a huge difference, and we took off from there."

Cameron finished with three goals and four assists - all in the second half - and Brennan McInnis had four goals as Bishop Guertin outscored Duxbury (14-3) 6-1 in the third quarter. Sean Cameron added two goals and three assists, while Drew Hailey had two goals and a helper, Fisher had a goal and two assists and Ben Abladian also scored.

"That was a statement game," Bishop Guertin coach Chris Cameron said. "They are a very good team. We were so ready, so revved, we didn’t play our best in the first half. We didn’t play poorly, but the game was their pace. They were getting faceoffs and taking two-plus minutes off at a clip. That’s not what we want.

"Once we got that first one, then the floodgates opened. It took us time to figure out where the double (team) was coming from."

James Heitmiller added 10 saves for the Cardinals, including two back-to-back at the end of the first half to keep Bishop Guertin in front, 4-3.

Duxbury got four goals from Joe Gooley, including one 1:20 into the second half that tied the game 4-4\. But after that goal, the Cardinals were able to dominate possession, and after Fisher's goal gave them the lead back, Bishop Guertin scored the next three goals - one from Abladian and two from Brian Cameron - in a minute.

Cameron made it three in a row with 3:31 left in the third and McInnis pushed the lead to 10-4 with 2:21 remaining.

"At times we played well and we did a good job of containing them," Duxbury coach Chris Sweet said. "We’d like to get that third quarter back. The wheels feel off.

"BG grabbed some momentum there in the third quarter. Usually when two good teams play, you get momentum swings and that didn’t swing back our way. When it did, it was way too late."

Will Prouty also had two goals for the Dragons and Brad Backlund added a goal in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
