When last week started, there were still quite a few undefeated teams left in the state, but the mighty have started dropping. Eleven boys and girls basketball and hockey teams suffered their first defeat of the season in the last few days, and there's potential for more carnage before the week is done. It began Monday, when Manchester Central topped Merrimack by three points in a battle of undefeated boys basketball teams. Also that night, the Hanover girls basketball team was upset on the road by Hollis Brookline for its first loss. On Tuesday, it was the Campbell girls basketball team's turn, as the Cougars fell to Bow at home - the same place the boys team handed Conant its first defeat of the year eight days before. Three more teams went down Wednesday, as the Newport boys basketball team lost to Sunapee, the Pinkerton girls basketball team fell to Winnacunnet and the Bishop Guertin girls hockey team lost to Bishop Brady-Trinity. Then on Thursday, the Portsmouth boys basketball went into Pembroke's gym and handed the Spartans their first loss in 31 games. It continued Friday, when Pinkerton returned the favor by knocking off the Londonderry girls basketball team. Also that night, the Groveton girls basketball team suffered its first loss, a one-point defeat to Woodsville. And Saturday brought a pair of overtime boys hockey losses, as Spaulding dropped its first game to Merrimack and Belmont-Gilford fell to Souhegan. So who is left in the pursuit of perfection? ### Division I boys basketball Central (11-0 in division) has handed Merrimack (62-59) and Trinity (77-60) their only losses on the season, and the Little Green have already beaten Londonderry, which is fifth in the standings, by 19 points. There are still good teams on Central's schedule, like Pinkerton (6-3) next Tuesday, Winnacunnet (6-3) on Feb. 21 and ends the year at Nashua South (5-3) on Feb. 25\. But Central has been winning games by an average of 23.3 points, with just two decided by single digits. The one team that might have the best shot at beating Central - outside of Merrimack and Trinity - would be Bishop Guertin (10-1), which doesn't play the Little Green during the regular season. A year ago, the Cardinals went to Manchester and knocked off Central in the D1 quarterfinals on their way to the title game. **Chances:** Very good. In a year where scoring seems to be down, Central has averaged 72 points per game in the division. With plenty of scoring options, including Brett Hanson and Joey and Jon Martin, it will be tough to slow Central down and not many teams will be able to outscore the Little Green. Bishop Guertin might have the best shot, as the Cardinals have averaged 70.1 points per game this year, but that meeting won't come until the postseason, if at all. ### Division I girls basketball Pinkerton's loss to Winnacunnet Wednesday and win over Londonderry Friday leaves one undefeated team in the division, Bedford (10-0). Chances are pretty good that the Bulldogs will remain that way when they play the Lancers on Feb. 19\. That game is followed by one at Pinkerton on Feb. 21. Before those games, the Bulldogs play four games against teams with a combined record of 11-28 . Chances are great Bedford will still be unbeaten when it hosts the Lancers and when it heads to Pinkerton two days later. Bedford has outscored its opponents by an average of 32.4 points this season, with its closest game a 46-44 win over Alvirne, and without that game, its a 35.8 margin of victory. That's also the only time the Bulldogs have allowed more than 37 points in a game, and only the second time they scored under 58. **Chances:** Very good. Bedford has been winning games by a substantial margin, and Pinkerton and Londonderry should have a chance to pull off the upset, but that seems unlikely, given that the Astros could be without Valerie Martin and the Lancers will be without Aliza Simpson when the teams meet in the regular season. Of course, if both teams get healthy, and either one meets Bedford in the postseason, it could be a different story. ### Division IV girls basketball For the second year in a row, Hinsdale (11-0) is cruising through its regular-season schedule. Last year, the Pacers were undefeated going into the playoffs, but lost in the semifinals to Groveton, who went on to win the division title. This year, Hinsdale has been averaging 56.1 points per game, and winning them by 27.3 points. Only one of those games - a 41-40 win over Pittsfield (7-5) - was decided by single digits. The Pacers also handed Sunapee (11-1) its only loss of the year, a 53-34 win, and beat Nute (8-2) by 30 points. **Chances:** 50-50\. Hindsale has some impressive wins on its resume, but it still has to play both Pittsfield, Sunapee and Nute again, along with Newport (6-5 in D-III). ### Division II boys hockey The two-time defending champions have looked like the team to beat again in the division. Bedford (10-0) is the deepest team in the state, with three solid lines, a strong defense and a battle-tested goalie. The Bulldogs have averaged a ridiculous 6.1 goals per game and have won all but one game by three goals or more. Three of those wins have come against three of the top teams in the division in Bow (8-2), Goffstown (8-2) and Pelham-Windham (8-3). **Chances:** Good. There aren't many teams that can match Bedford top to bottom, but the Bulldogs have a stretch of games against Bow, Dover (8-2), Merrimack (4-5) and Spaulding (9-1) in a row. If Bedford makes it through that, there's games against Goffstown and Merrimack to end the season. The Bulldogs might not make it through the regular season unscathed, but they're the favorites to win the division.
