Noah Taylor went into his senior season with the Hollis Brookline High School boys lacrosse team with a different perspective.

It wasn't just because it would be his last year playing for the Cavaliers.

After starting on attack for HB as a sophomore, Taylor was poised to have a big junior year, but after just three days of preseason practices, that changed.

"I played the first couple of practices, hurt my back, and then I was out for the rest of the season," he said. "It took a little while to figure out, like a couple of weeks, because it wasn’t a typical injury. It was really rough, but when you get back into it, it makes you want to work even harder. It makes me really appreciate being out here, especially for senior year."

Taylor is just one of five seniors on the Cavs' roster this season, and with a younger mix of returners and newcomers, HB coach Mac Martin is thankful to have a player with Taylor's experience and leadership in the fold.

"It’s definitely a good thing having him back, especially where we return two sophomores and we lost one senior," Martin said. "It’s kind of a nice puzzle piece. There’s a gap and he fills that gap perfectly.

"Having him come out, be a leader throughout the offseason, he was named a captain (in the preseason), and having him be a leader moving forward for us is going to be huge, especially having a smaller senior class of only five."

But having that low number of upperclassmen also means there aren't a lot of players on the roster who have shared the field with Taylor. And with Martin in his second year as the varsity coach, it's the first time they've worked together with him on the field.

Despite that, Taylor has tried to take everything in stride.

"It’s definitely a lot different than sophomore year," Taylor said. "Underclassman to senior captain. It’s really great to be able to help some of the younger guys out, to really coach them and make sure they’re going to succeed in the future. Try to keep the program going well for as long as we can."

Taylor, who also played soccer at HB and returned for his senior season in the fall, tried to spend his time last year doing whatever he could from the sideline. Sometimes that meant sharing his knowledge with younger teammates, and sometimes that meant helping out with some more mundane things.

"My first year, I had to learn all the guys," Martin said. "Noah was able to help us out with more of that day-to-day stuff, beneficial to the team. Getting to know him not just as a lacrosse kid, but as a high school kid, it was great to build that relationship. Now I'm getting to know him off the field more, to now seeing his passion for lacrosse come out every single day."

That time has paid off for Taylor and the Cavs through the first two weeks of the season. HB is off to a 5-0 start in Division II, with Taylor recording points in every game, hitting double digits in goals.

"It was good observing for a year," he said. "I got to spend a lot of time with (Martin), especially on the sideline. I was kind of doing a little coaching, just trying to help out guys while I was out. It really helped us transition into this year because I’ve already had a lot of work with those guys. We work really well together as a team."

Taylor was given the OK to return to activities just after the end of the school year, and as soon as he was, he tried to make up for lost time. Seeing that made Martin believe he'd be in for a big senior season.

"Right when he got cleared to shoot and move last year, he was out here," the coach said. "He's definitely done a great job of being patient. There was never any begging to sneak on the field. And this year, he is making the most of it. He’s coming out, he’s working hard, he’s ready to go, and it’s going to continue to benefit him."
