The Nashua High School South football team experienced last season something it hasn't had to go through in a long time.

The Panthers won just two games a year ago, their lowest win total since the split. But whatever bad taste South coach Scott Knight may have had left from that year was washed away by what his players did in the offseason.

"On Thursday nights, when we did 7-on-7s, a few weeks we've had 50 kids," Knight said. "When I talked to the defense this (Wednesday) morning, I said how many people have been participating in our summer program?

"Just about every kid, so we hit the ground running, which was great. We've never done that. We normally have half our squad, which means you’ve got to reteach it. We're way ahead of where we normally are, definitely."

That's good news for a team that was one of the youngest in Division I a season ago. That youth led to a lot of growing pains for the Panthers, but Knight believes that, although the numbers are a little down for South, he's got a group that is fully committed.

"We've got a hungry bunch," he said. "We were very young in a lot of areas last year, and we're still fairly young in areas this year, but a lot of those guys played last season. We're definitely more seasoned than we were last year, and it's a hungry bunch just because of the results last year. The guys who stayed on have done a great job the last nine months."

With lower numbers than usual, the biggest concern for the Panthers will be injuries. While there is some depth, South doesn't have the bodies to withstand a lot of players going down this season.

"We have probably a little better depth than we've had, but you can only have so much," Knight said. "We don't have 150 kids in our program, so we could sustain a couple of injuries, but anything beyond that would put us in trouble."

South has scrimmages at Winnacunnet (Aug. 20) and at Exeter (Aug. 23) while it will also scrimmage Merrimack (Aug. 27) at home.
