In a couple of years, it might seem like a fair trade to Jeff Moore.

The Bishop Guertin High School football team saw 28 seniors move on from last year's playoff team, and the second-year Cardinals coach has about the same number of freshmen coming up to the squad this year.

While those totals might even out in terms of overall numbers, it likely won't do much to help the varsity this season.

"We're a very athletic group, but a little bit younger group overall," Moore said. "There are definitely question marks as far as who are going to be the guys. We had a lot of seniors who played quite a bit last year, so we're trying to figure out who is going to earn those spots. It's exciting to see the competition in some of those areas. We'll let that all play out."

Despite the drop in numbers among upperclassmen, the Cardinals had a core group who led the way through the offseason, both in the weight room and in 7-on-7s.

"It was kind of the same 10 to 15 guys who were always there, and then a couple of other guys here and there," Moore said. "It was a good group and I feel like they've prepared well.

"It was a good summer. We competed in the 7-on-7 tournament in Exeter and we qualified for New Englands. We competed with some of the best teams in New England and we were right there."

But with that experience, and the confidence that came with it, under its belt, Bishop Guertin needs to find a way to make that translate into success during the season.

"Now it's time to put it together," Moore said. "It's real football. We've got to run the ball and play defense. You put the pads on and some things change quite a bit."

Bishop Guertin will scrimmage at Bedford on Aug. 20 and against Salem on Aug. 23 before hosting the first Gate City Jamboree on Aug. 27 at Stellos Stadium. Other teams participating include Alvirne and Windham, along with Lowell and Dracut, Mass.
