NASHUA - This fall sports season has been short for everyone, and Wednesday, the Bishop Guertin High School field hockey team wasn't ready for it to come to an end.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Cardinals flipped a switch after halftime, scoring four unanswered goals to beat Merrimack 4-1 in the Division I preliminary round.

Stephanie Coulombe scored three goals for Bishop Guertin (4-3), including the game-tying goal just 2:51 into the third quarter, and senior Brooke Yabroudy scored what proved to be the game winner on a redirection of a shot by freshman Taylor Guibord with 9:23 to go on the third.

"The first goal was the most exciting moment because everyone was in this," Yabroudy said. "I think before, we were like, all right, we’re down, but right when we scored, we picked it up. I think that was what started it for us.

"For us, keeping our energy up is something we’ve been trying to do. Honestly, the momentum just continued the whole time, which is huge for the next game coming up. We’re going to need that energy."

Bishop Guertin, which was given the No. 1 spot in Region 1 in the NHIAA's blind draw, will host Keene on Saturday in a quarterfinal that's scheduled for 2 p.m. at Stellos Stadium.

Coulombe added her second goal with 5:05 remaining in the third to make it 3-1 and then finished out the scoring with 11:08 to play. After Merrimack (3-1-1) as able to get the ball behind the Bishop Guertin defense on several occasions in the first half, the Cardinals did a better job of getting back in the second.

"They were scrappy, they were quick, they were cutting to the ball, so every time we drove it, it was a complete turnover," Merrimack coach Ann MacLean said. "They’re fast and they were more confident."

The Tomahawks to a 1-0 lead just 2:36 into the game, when Avery Hui sent a ball into the circle and it was deflected by Paige Rivet. The redirect took a funny bounce and got by Bishop Guertin goalie Monina Tosi.

Merrimack had opportunities for more, but Tosi came up with a couple of big plays, including breaking up what would have been a breakaway by Rivet late in the first quarter. The senior also made a sprawling save midway through the second that kept it a one-goal game.

"It could have probably been two or three, but I think she stayed strong in there and she knew it was an unfortunate bounce, so it didn’t fluster her at all," Bishop Guertin assistant coach Cam Hult said. "She had to be the last line of defense for our team. She responded great."

The Cardinals were able to put some pressure on Merrimack's defense late in the half, but were unable to break through, as Tomahawks goalie Natalia Gonzalez made a couple of saves.

But Bishop Guertin carried that momentum into the second half.

"We definitely lit a little fire under their butts at halftime," Bishop Guertin head coach Erica Chareth said. "We never stepped back and just kept firing and didn’t let them respond."

Merrimack had a couple of opportunities in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get a shot on goal, and by then, the deficit had turned into three goals. Playing in just their fifth game of the season, the Tomahawks couldn't find away to get back in sync.

"They got down on themselves," MacLean said. "We’ve seen goals being scored. We were playing harder and doing more work than we really needed to. After five games, we’re still working the kinks out. We’re thankful that we had some games and were able to play."
