NASHUA - The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team knows that sometimes it's offense isn't going to run on all cylinders.

But the Cardinals also know that if they're playing defense the way coach Brad Kreick wants them to, it might not matter.

Bishop Guertin was solid again defensively Friday night against Pinkerton, as the Cardinals held the Astros to just three points in the first quarter and 10 in the first half, on the way to a 50-38 win in Division I action.

The Cardinals (15-1) held the Astros (12-4) scoreless for almost 10 minutes in the first half and forced 20 turnovers to win their 12th game in a row.

"They played with great energy, particularly defensively, which has kind of been our thing," Kreick said. "Take care of business on the defensive side of the floor and usually good things will happen. I was very pleased, particularly in the first half, with how they defended."

Caroline Hoffer led the way on offense with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Meghan Cramb was also in double figures with 10 points and Abbi Field and Molly Dee each chipped in with eight.

Balanced scoring has also been something the Cardinals have been getting more of this season, as they've had seven different leading scorers this year.

"It's been like that for the last few games," Cramb said. "We're spreading out the scoring and a lot of people are getting close to double digits. It's great that everyone is stepping up and everything is coming together."

Marissa Stacy led the Astros (12-4) with 14 points and Amanda Lemire chipped in with 10 for Pinkerton, which lost for the fourth time in its last six games. The Astros have averaged just 32 points in those four losses.

Pinkerton found its offense in the second half, scoring 28 points and even getting the lead down to nine with a little under two minutes to play. But with the chance to get closer, the Astros turned the ball over and Bishop Guertin made 3 of 4 free throws to put the game away.

"There were a couple little lapses where we gave us some 3s, so we'll have to take a look at what happened there and get that cleaned up," Kreick said. "You never like to give up a 17- or 18-point lead and let somebody back in the game. We told the kids after the game that it’s a good learning experience for us.

"You can't ever let up at any point in time in any game against a good basketball team. It'll be a positive thing for us in reinforcing that we’ve got to stay with it for 32 minutes with good teams."
