BG held North to only 29 points in the first half and led 52-43 going into the final quarter. But as soon as the fourth quarter began, the Titans defense locked down and took advantage of multiple Cardinal turnovers to pull out the 62-56 win. Titans coach Steve Lane opened the fourth quarter by having his defense setup in a half-court trap that disrupted the Cardinals' rhythm on offense. He then had his team press full-court and turned the Cardinals over multiple times. By the time BG called a timeout at the 5:32 mark, North (6-4) scored seven straight points and closed the score to 52-50. “We were pretty poor on defense for three quarters,” Lane said. “Then in the fourth quarter we switched defenses to a 1-3-1 half court to change the tempo and get us in transition more. We started to guard in the half court and we got more physical and challenged more shots.” North’s duo of Robinson Rodriguez and Jaden Pena came through on the offensive end when the team needed them most. Despite playing a lot of minutes due the team’s limited depth coming into the game, the two scored all 19 points for the team in the fourth and went 11for 11 from the free throw line to keep the game out of reach for the Cardinals. Rodriguez’s interior presence on both ends proved to be immense for North down the stretch. “He was great,” Lane said. “It was a good high school game for him. I hope he continues that attitude and effort. It’s fun to watch the guys play together and the ball moves.” Pena led the team with 21 points on the night, while Rodriguez was right behind him with 19. The Cardinals (3-7) knew the Titans were going to be a challenge and Horne was impressed with how his team came ready to play and competed for the full game. “I think it was a testament to how hard our guys were working,” Horne said. “Loose balls, rebounds, 50-50 balls I thought our guys were winning early in the game and it showed on the scoreboard.” BG shot the ball well for the majority of the game regardless of who was on the court. Nine different players scored for the Cardinals, who converted 10 3-pointers, compared to just three makes for the Titans behind the arc. Eli Youssef led the Cardinals with 15 points. After dropping four straight to open 2024, the Titans now have wins back-to-back against their Nashua rivals. They head to Londonderry on Friday to take on the Lancers. The Cardinals look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host Salem.
