BEDFORD – Emma Massicotte knew how important it would be for the St. Thomas Aquinas High School field hockey team to score the first goal in Saturday’s Division III championship.

So when the senior found herself alone on the far post, the ball coming toward and the goal wide open in front of her, she wasn’t going to miss it.

Massicotte knocked in the open shot to give the Saints that first goal and No. 4 St. Thomas rode that momentum to a 4-0 win over No. 3 Mascenic to win the D3 title at Bedford High School. It’s the program’s second title and first since winning the Class I championship in 2003.

“I can’t describe it, it was probably one of the happiest moments of my life,” Massicotte said of the goal. “Talula (Gregg) had it and then she passed it over to me, and I was at the post, and I just hit it in. I feel like we all just came together and hugged each other, and it was just amazing.”

Gregg scored moments later to make it a 2-0 game, and the senior also had two assists, giving her five goals and three assists in the Saints’ three playoff games.

Mattie Williams and Riley Thomas both scored in the fourth quarter to put the game away for St. Thomas (14-3) while Lizzy Holden and Leah Walsh each had an assist.

“They came out ready and finished the season strong,” St. Thomas coach Lindsay Dobecki said. “We were in the position where we knew it was the last possible game. This team’s felt like it has a really special bond, so they wanted to finish on a strong note, and I think we did that.”

While the Saints were able to find the back of the net, the defense did what it had to to keep the Vikings (13-4) from doing the same. Mascenic had six penalty corners, but only got one shot on goal off on those opportunities, as the corner defense, led by goalie Bizzie Pelletier along with Walsh and Peyton Baker, was strong all game.

“Our fly and trail work incredibly well together,” Dobecki said of Walsh and Baker. “They were just on (Saturday). They were working very well in communicating who needed to step where to shut down their corner piece.”

St. Thomas took a 2-0 lead into halftime, and it was still a two-goal game going into the fourth quarter. After watching Mascenic in the semifinals come back in the fourth quarter and beat Hopkinton in double overtime, the Saints were read for the Vikings to make a push.

But after an initial push from Mascenic, St. Thomas was able to counter, forcing Vikings goalie Evelyn Shippee (15 saves) to make a couple of stops before Williams chipped the ball into the goal with 12:53 remaining.

“Don’t stop,” Holden said. “They came back in the semis, so it was, don’t even give them a chance. They’re an insanely talented team. If you give them momentum, they will go take it and we weren’t going to give them an of that momentum.”

Mascenic responded by keeping the ball in St. Thomas’ end for a stretch, getting a pair of corners, but the Saints withstood the push and made one of their own in the final minutes, leading to the goal by Thomas with nine seconds remaining.

“We knew it was going to be a challenging couple of weeks,” Dobecki said. “We just focused on what we needed to improve. You have to keep playing your game strong. You can’t let up until the final whistle.”
