MILFORD - In an electrifying shootout, the Milford High School football team fell just shy of a come-from-behind victory in the final seconds of the game against St. Thomas, as the Saints rallied for a 41-40 win.

The scoring started just minutes into the game. After a stalled Milford drive, the Spartans were forced to punt deep in their own territory. The punt would have set the Saints up in excellent field position, but Will Maclean had other ideas, taking the punt 50 yards in for the touchdown. Milford, determined to push the Saints (4-0) back, answered immediately with an incredible drive of its own.

Sparked by the vision and speed of quarterback Gavin Urda, the Spartans (2-2) flew right down the field and scored a touchdown of their own. Urda ripped the St. Thomas defense for an 80-yard carry. Fullback Junior Ughu powered his way into the end zone to cap off the drive. Less than three minutes later, the Saints would respond again.

The Saints used their strong passing game to pick apart the Milford defense. The drive was finished with quarterback Shawn DeKorne carrying in for the touchdown on a 5-yard scamper.

Milford pushed right back again with another quick offensive score of their own, as Ughu rumbled in for his second score of the game from 15-yards out to tie the game again at 14-14\. But less than a minute after that score, the Saints were at it again again.

DeKorne hit Edwin Estevez for a gain of 65-yards set the Saints up in the Milford red zone, and on a fourth-and-5, DeKorne hit Maclean over the middle for the score to give the Saints the lead again, 21-14.

St. Thomas extended the lead in the second quarter, as the Saints drove the length of the field, with DeKorne running in another quarterback keeper. But the missed extra point gave the Saints a 27-14 lead. Just before the final seconds of the half ended, Milford cut the lead on a fourth-and-8 play.

Urda was pressured all night, and on this play in particular was forced to scramble and roll out of the pocket. Fortunately, he was able to connect with Owen Zalenski out of the backfield for the touchdown. The score cut the Saints lead 27-21 heading into half.

Milford got back in the game in a big way in the third quarter. The Saints opened up on offense and moved the ball down into Spartans territory with ease, DeKorne was intercepted by Urda, halting the drive at the Spartans 10-yard line.

Urda helped lead a six-minute drive to retake the lead for Milford. Junior Ughu, who carried defenders all night when running, powered in for his third touchdown run to give Milford the 28-27 lead.

But just as Milford did in the final seconds of the second quarter, St. Thomas did in the third. DeKorne hit Maclean for the second time on the night for a 20-yard touchdown pass with just 34 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Saints connected through the air again for the two-point conversion to give St. Thomas the lead again at 35-28.

The Spartans responded very quickly, with Urda hitting Ughu out of the backfield for a gain of 35-yards to the Saints 2-yard line. On the next play, Milford capped the drive off with a touchdown run by Zalenski, but the Saints blocked the extra point to hang on to a 35-34 lead.

Milford's defense held the Saints on their next drive and forced them to punt. The Spartans ripped right down the field again and scored off of an Urda touchdown pass to Tristyn Shattuck, but the two-point conversion was no good and Milford led 40-35 with just three minutes remaining.

St. Thomas responded immediately, with a DeKorne touchdown run with just 52 seconds remaining in the game. A failed two-point conversion gave the Saints the slight 41-40 lead.

With just 23 seconds left, and Milford with the ball at midfield, the Saints finally got the stop they needed to seal the game. Nicholas Tosatti picked off Urda on a busted screen play to save the day for the Saints.
