DOVER - Talula Gregg was ready to end Saturday's Division III field hockey quarterfinal, so she did.

The St. Thomas Aquinas High School senior collected a rebound off the pads of Mascoma Valley goalie Sam Harkins and put it in the back of the cage with under a minute remaining in overtime.

It was Gregg's third goal of the game, giving the No. 4 Saints a 3-2 win over the No. 5 Royals and putting them in the semifinals for the first time since 2003\. St. Thomas will face top-seeded Berlin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

"I was seeing stars," Gregg said. "I was like ‘this needs to be over.’ We worked so hard all game and I feel like everyone worked so well together. Everyone was hustling to the fullest. I didn’t score that goal, we worked together to get that goal."

Plays and performances like that are something Saints coach Lindsay Dobecki has come to expect from Gregg, who is committed to play lacrosse next year at Vanderbilt University.

"Talula is just a phenomenal athlete," Dobecki said. "She’s one of those players who understands crunch moments, and as we saw (Saturday), does a great job of putting the ball in the back of the net when we need her to.

"On top of that, she’s a fantastic team player and she’s a great distributor. She moves the ball up the field. She’s one of those key players we can kind of throw into different positions when we need it and help be the glue to the team."

Lizzy Holden had an assist on Gregg's first goal, which came with 6:41 left in the first quarter and gave St. Thomas (12-3) the lead. Bizzy Pelletier finished with nine saves, including a couple late in regulation to help get the Saints to overtime.

Sophia Smith and Tori Petty each had a goal for the Royals (11-4-1), with Makenna Houston getting an assist on Petty's goal, which gave Mascoma a 2-1 lead with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter. St. Thomas took a timeout after the goal to regroup, and Gregg tied the game with 1:30 to go before the fourth quarter.

With the Saints riding that momentum, Harkins, who finished with 15 saves, came up big in the early moments of the final quarter. St. Thomas had two penalty corners and Harkins made four of her seven saves in the fourth on those two set plays.

"Sam Harkins came up huge toward the end, she saved us there a bit," Mascoma coach Danielle Pushee said. "We played phenomenal. We came down here being the underdog, playing on turf when we don’t play on it all year, and I think that they adjusted really well.

"They had opportunities and didn’t capitalize on all of them, but I am proud of every single one of them. They gave everything they had to this game. This is not how we wanted to go out, but I’m proud of every single one of them."

After Gregg's first goal, the Royals took control of play for long stretches, getting two of their three corners in the opening moments of the second quarter. While Mascoma wasn't able to capitalize there, the Royals kept the pressure on and finally broke through on Smith's goal with 6:13 to go until halftime.

"They dominated the half, once they picked themselves back up," Pushee said. "I’m never worried about this team fighting back when we get down. They’re gritty, they work hard, and they wanted it."

Mascoma carried that momentum through the rest of the half, getting another corner late that Pelletier had to make a save on, and the Royals continued to push to start the third quarter.

Midway through, Houston sent the ball into the circle, where it was redirected by a St. Thomas defender right to Petty. The sophomore's shot across caught the far side of the cage and went in to put the Royals up 2-1.

The Saints took a timeout to settle things back down.

"It was a moment to regroup, to remember we still had time and to not play frantic," Dobecki said. "Keep playing our game and we believed they could do it. Keep the focus on what is important."

Gregg could see an instant shift in the way her and her teammates were playing and it paid off almost immediately.

"The playoff game brought up our energy and intensity, and our energy was going chaotic," she said. "We needed that timeout to calm us down to play more of our game. It helped us take a deep breath because everyone was so tired. It was helpful to calm us down."

Mascoma used its timeout with 2:35 remaining in regulation, but St. Thomas was able to get the ball back and put pressure on the Royals' defense. Mascoma was able to make a final push in the last minute of regulation, but Pelletier made a save and time ran out before the Royals could get the rebound.

"Just needed one more touch, or five more seconds on the clock before the fourth quarter ended, and it might have been a different story," Pushee said. "I think that we had an offensive push that could answer theirs. We did a great job controlling the ball and moving the ball."

The Saints were able to keep possession for most of the overtime, getting three corners, the last of which set up Gregg's game-winning goal.

"She was killing it," Gregg said of Harkins. "We were like stick to our game, make smart decisions, smart plays. We don’t need to drill it into the goalie every time. She’s a very good goalie. We needed to play our game and pass to teammates and take shots."
